William Joseph Simmons was born in Harpersville (Ala.) in 1880. After serving in the Spanish-American War, he became a Methodist circuit preacher in Alabama and Florida. He served in that capacity until 1912 when he was suspended at the Methodist Bishop Conference. Simmons then became active in numerous fraternal organizations, primarily the Woodmen of the World in Birmingham (Ala.). After a "vision," and in conjunction with the Hollywood release of movie The Birth of a Nation, he was instrumental in organizing a revived Ku Klux Klan in 1915 in Atlanta (Ga.). He appointed himself the emperor and imperial wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and began a crusade to increase membership which reached its height in the 1920s A rift in the Klan leadership resulted in Dr. Hiram Wesley Evans of Dallas (Tex.) replacing Simmons as imperial wizard in November 1922. After an automobile accident in 1925 Simmons' health soon began to fail and he eventually moved to Luverne (Ala.) where he died in 1945.

The collection mainly consists of papers of John Quincy Jett relating to his involvement with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) from 1920-1925. Contains correspondence, printed material, clippings, and photographs of KKK activities including a government investigation of the KKK, the establishment of a press clipping bureau within the KKK to monitor and counter act publicity, and information on the power struggle between William J. Simmons and Hiram Evans. Correspondents include Elizabeth Tyler, Simmons, and Edward Young Clarke. The collection also contains land deeds from the 1800's.

These photographic images were made between 1917 and 1922. They show numerous Ku Klux Klan activities in and around Atlanta, including Klan ceremonies on and around Stone Mountain (Ga.). Also of note are photos of Simmons in his imperial wizard robe with other officers, as well as a photo of a textile factory showing workers making Klan robes. Landmarks depicted in the photos include the "Imperial Palace" headquarters of the Klan; Simmons' home; Klan property on the Peachtree Creek battlefield in Georgia; and Lanier University, a small college in Atlanta bought by the Klan.
