Tudor family papers II, 1765-1862

Title: Tudor family papers II, 1765-1862.

A small collection of misc. papers of the Tudor family of Boston, in particular William Tudor, a Boston lawyer. His papers include letters written from loyalists Mather Byles of Halifax, Robert Auchmuty and William Vassall of London regarding Tudor's assistance in recovering their confiscated property in Mass. following their evacuation from Boston during the Revolution. The collection also includes misc. bills and receipts to Tudor, a few items of his son Frederic, two letters from Jared Sparks to Tudor's wife Delia, and a letter from Charles Sumner to Euphemia F. Tudor (Mrs. Frederic, 1862).

Byles, Mather, 1735-1814. Diary, 1765.

Title: Diary, 1765.

This item is a photocopy of Mather Byles diary for 1765. The diary is interleaved in Nathaniel Ames'An Astronomical Diary ... 1765 ... (New-London, [1764]) and contains brief, intermittent entries that refer to visits, prayer sessions with the Connecticut General Court, church Society Meetings, pulpit exchanges, funerals, and public fasts protesting the Stamp Act. There are also various accounts, such as the value of his property and his income, and a list of "presents" given him by his parishioners. The list includes specific food items, articles of clothing, and cords of wood. The diary also contains a record of scriptures used as the basis of his sermons for the entire year, Byles' income from marriages performed, and a record of wages paid to his servants.

Barber, John Warner, 1798-1885,. Drawings collection 1773-1905.

Title: Drawings collection 1773-1905.

The American Antiquarian Society's drawings collection consists mostly of genre scenes featuring everyday life, landscapes and portraits. Several items in the collection appear to be preparatory drawings for book, periodical and lithograph illustration. There are also thirteen bound sketchbooks. The drawings date from 1773 to 1905, with the bulk dating from the 1840s and 1850s. Drawings range in size from 9.5 x 13.5 cm. to 64.5 x 51.5 cm. The most numerous drawings are those by Alfred Carleton (1791-1875), Lucy E.R. Treadwell (1826- ) and Catherine Partridge Wyman (1825-ca.1880). Also included are sketches done by Sir Henry James Warre (1819-1898) on his trip to the Northwest Territory of which several were reproduced in Sketches in North America and the Oregon Territory, Alonzo Chappel's (1828-1887) illustrations for "Hasty Pudding" which appeared in the July 1856 issue of Harper's Magazine and John Warner Barber's (1798-1885) illustrations for his Massachusetts and Connecticut drawings for Historical Collections. In addition to these drawings for printing and publishing, there are several drawings for Isaiah Thomas's texts and many dealing with biblical themes. There are several by George E. Gladwin (1829-1920) professor of art at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and two of Dighton Rock by Edward Seager (ca. 1809-1886). The rest of the collection is composed of an assortment of student drawings, building interior and exterior views, geometric sketches, family portraits, political cartoons, family coat of arms, the Massachusetts state seal, drawings for membership certificates and floral pieces. There are also drawings of places in Great Britain including Robert Burns Cottage, Dartmoor Prison, and various castles.
