The collection consists of Gray Herbarium correspondence from the 1890s to present day but the bulk of the letters are from 1890-1955. Most of the letters are addressed to staff members of the Gray Herbarium and were transferred to the archives from office files. Some letters were gifts to the Gray Herbarium that were interfiled into the collection.

The correspondence file was reconstructed from letters and other documents filed by personal name in the library historic manuscript file. A large file called "letters of botanists" was given to the library by the herbarium in the late 1960s; this file was interfiled with other manuscripts in the Historic Manuscript file in 1980. The reconstructed file contains incoming and outgoing letters, lists of incoming plant collections, and lists of determinations by plant specialists. The correspondence with collectors and plant specialists concerns purchases, gifts, exchanges, and outgoing loans of herbarium specimens. There is much correspondence with Greenman concerning his specialty, Senecio. The correspondence and loan file is a valuable supplement to the brief accession and exchange registers and card files described above, because it contains more detail on plant accessions and exchange. There is missing correspondence. Large gaps are found in files with major institutions. Earlier correspondence is found in the Director's records of William Trelease. These records are continued in the herbarium curator records of Robert Woodson. Also included are four bound volumes of Greenman's records on specimens gathered by three men who worked as professional collectors for the Garden. The volumes are labelled: "Plants of the Southwestern United States collected by Mr. Ernest J. Palmer (#1-44518)"; "Plants collected by Rev. John W. Davis chiefly in Missouri (#1-12144)"; and "Plants of Brazil collected by Dr. B. A. Krukoff (#1-12150, ca. 1931)".

Greenman, Jesse More, 1867-1951. Jesse More Greenman papers, 1899-1944.

Title: Jesse More Greenman papers, 1899-1944.

Notes and manuscripts are for his monograph on Senecio which was never published. However, he published many papers on this genus. His lectures include popular lectures before civic groups, as well as those for courses at Washington University and Harvard.

Krukoff, B. A. Boris Alexander Krukoff papers, 1942-1982.

Title: Boris Alexander Krukoff papers, 1942-1982.

The papers are primarily Krukoff's own reprints and books, correspondence, passports, photos, scrapbooks, and sketches. There is research division correspondence concerning Krukoff collections and Krukoff papers deposited at the New York Botanical Garden and the Smithsonian Institution. Krukoff's papers include project files on legumes, Merck research, Sapotaceae, Flacourtiaceae, Papaver bracteatum, Menispermaceae, Myrtaceae, Simaroubaceae, and the Missouri Botanical Garden African, Peruvian and Nicaraguan projects at the Garden. Biographical materials on B.A. and Florence Krukoff and the correspondence of Florence Krukoff on politics are also in these papers. Correspondents of B.A. Krukoff include Dr. Cava, Dr. Sleumer, Ghillean Prance and Professor A.H. Jackson.
