Krukoff (1898-1983) was a Russian immigrant who spent his career with Merck and Co. working with plants as sources of various drugs, including anesthetics, antimalarials, anthelmintics, and cortisone. He was a specialist on the American species of Strychnos. Between 1928 and 1955, he led numerous botanical expeditions to South America, Africa, and Sumatra to discover useful plants.

Boris Alexander Krukoff (1898-1983) was a systematic botanist, botanical consultant and leading private benefactor of botanical research. He served as botanical consultant to Merck & Company from 1935-1983, managing and later purchasing their Guatemala cinchona plantations. He was an honorary curator at the New York Botanical Garden whose medicinal plant research concentrated on the family Menispermaceae and the genera Strychnos and Erythrina.
