Randolph Silliman Bourne and Carl Zigrosser were friends at Columbia, summered together in the country, and shared an apartment in New York after their graduation. A falling-out between the two ended the touching closeness displayed in this correspondence. Bourne's letters reflect their shared interests and are a restless and eager record of 4 years of their lives. Topics covered include music, social evenings, nature and hiking, college politics at the Columbia Monthly, evening speakers at Columbia, art and the philosophy of color, Edward Murray, Rockwell Kent, Joyce Kilmer, Woodrow Wilson, possible articles for publication, college gossip about mutual friends, Frederick Keppel and Bernard Shaw. Many of the letters were written during Bourne's year in Europe (1913-1914). Besidesdescribing the countryside and characterizing nations Bourne writes about town planning and social welfare, a lecture by G.K. Chesterton, social movements in England, Sylvia Pankhurst, Havelock Ellis, Walt Whitman, women that he meets and his reaction to them, impressions of Paris over London, and the 1914 General Strike in Italy. There are few letters after his return to the United States (a time when he and Zigrosser lived together and then parted company), most are written from Dublin, N.H. and tell of meeting William Merritt Chase and Edwin Arlington Robinson at Amy Lowell's and life in that intellectual circle. This correspondence also contains a brief and biting note by Carl Zigrosser describing Bourne's funeral, and a folder containing published works by Bourne and appreciations written upon his death.

Ruth Starr Rose was an artist whose work was represented at Weyhe Gallery. She was also a friend of Carl Zigrosser and his family. Her frequent and friendly letters to Carl Zigrosser detail the progress of her work, exhibitions, and sales. She also writes about he family life, their mutual friends, her many homes (especially Pickbourne on the Eastern Shore of Maryland), and her thoughts on southern landscape, southern life, spiritualism and entertaining. Ruth Starr Rose did work for the American Artists Group, and travelled in the American West, Mexico and Europe. Most of her letters are undated. Included in the file are exhibition announcements and catalogs. Some. letters are addressed to Florence King, Zigrosser's first wife. Others are addressed to Laura Canadé, an employee of the Weyhe Gallery and Carl Zigrosser's second wife. Some letters from Rose's home are written by Victoria Hutson Huntley.

These letters are written by the artist Jessie Warneke, the wife of the sculptor Heinz Warneke. Their work was represented at the Weyhe Gallery. Her lively correspondence with Carl Zigrosser concerns itself with life among the American artists living in Europe in the 1930's, their circle of mutual friends in the art world of New York, the progress of Heinz Warneke's work and his commissions, her own work and exhibitions, domestic news, their life as artist-farmers in Connecticut, life in Washington, the 1963 unveiling of a statue by Heinz at the Philadelphia Zoo, and their appreciation of Zigrosser's books. Later letters concern old times together and the subject of aging. Among the people mentioned in Jessie Warneke's letters are Mabel Dwight, Florence King, Erhard Weyhe, Roderick Seidenberg, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Katherine Schmidt (Schubert), John B. Carl Zigrosser was a follower of the popular English psychologist (and follower of Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff) A. R. Orage. Included in this correspondence with Carl Zigrosser and Florence King are clippings and advertisements, essays by and about Orage, a circular letter from Gurdjieff on the death of Orage, and an obituary for Orage. Topics covered in Orage's letters to Zigrosser and King include notices about meetings and lectures, monetary gifts to Gurdjieff and his Institute, the well-being of the Gurdjieff circles in England and America, advice about acting on Orage's principles, and information about the National Social Credit Association. Copies of letters from Zigrosser to Orage ask for advice and help with defining some of the terms used by Orage and Gurdjieff. There are also pages of notes made by Zigrosser.
