The papers contain manuscripts, correspondence, and financial papers documenting Braithwaite's career as editor, anthologizer, poet, critic and university professor. There are manuscripts, letters, proofs, reviews, permissions to quote, royalty reports or related material for many books written or edited by Braithwaite as well as a typescript of an oral history interview with him. Braithwaite's files from the "Anthology of magazine verse," 1913-1929, contain copies of poems reviewed, correspondence re publishing matters, financial difficulties and some proof. Files from B.J. Brimmer Company include correspondence, a financial ledger and material on a few of the books considered by the firm. Personal correspondence documents family life, friendship with literary figures, guidance of young writers, professional activities, financial struggles, and teaching at Atlanta University, 1934-45. Topical files contain correspondence with or about agents, publishers and poetry societies and journals. There are also proofs or manuscripts of other writers including Clive Bell, Caroline Giltinan, Brookes More and Clinton Scollard. Of interest are a copy of a 1917 letter from Vachel Lindsay re "Birth of a nation" and Southern racism, and a program from the memorial service for Thomas Wentworth Higginson.
