Title: Lincoln conspirators collection, 1865-1997.

The bulk of the collection is from 1865 and consists of photographs, newspapers, artifacts, and letters related to the Lincoln conspirators and their trial before a military commission. Included are photographs of the conspirators and the generals who either served as trial judges or guarded the conspirators during the trial. The newspapers range from April to July 1865 and cover topics from Lincoln's assassination to the execution of the conspirators. Artifacts include a swatch of fabric from the dress of actress Laura Keene, who cradled Lincoln's head in her lap after he was shot. The collection also includes letters from the generals regarding their parts in the trial and execution. Other items of note include the "wanted" poster for Booth, Herold, and Surratt; "mug shots" of the conspirators taken by Alexander Gardner; the execution order of the conspirators; and a series of five photographs of the execution taken by Alexander Gardner.

Title: Rapp-Idleman family papers, 1861-1883.

The collection largely consists of letters written by their siblings and close friends to William Rapp and Clara Idleman Rapp during the Civil War and the post-war years up to 1883. Two of William's brothers served in Ohio infantry regiments and their letters describe daily military life and movements and engagements of their regiments. A third brother living in Terre Haute, Ind., and San Francisco, Calif., writes of personal experiences in those cities and events occurring between 1861 and 1883. William kept a diary during 1864 in which he describes daily life in the 121st Ohio Infantry Regiment and early engagements of the Atlanta Campaign. Other Ohio soldiers in Union regiments write to Clara, a number of whom are apparently courting her. After the war, several relatives and friends write to Clara, relating family events and activities related to Smithville Academy, a teacher preparatory school in Ohio. Clara kept a diary during 1870, in which she describes daily family events, chronic personal health problems and teaching activities.

The album contains numerous clippings of images and text from a variety of publications. Other items include a ticket to a lecture by Anna E. Dickinson on Lincoln's death, Carte de visite photographs of John Wilkes Booth and Lewis Payne, a copy of a proclamation from 1923 declaring Lincoln Day in the state of Massachusetts, a broadside from 1965 advertising Terry's Panorama of the war and assassination of Lincoln, and photographs of a monument to Lincoln in the province of Lucca, Italy.

Mrs. Thomas Baxter Gresham, daughter of Joseph E. Johnston, based this journal on extracts from diaries regarding the Civil War and its personalities, which she kept as a girl. She begins the journal with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and records the capture of Jefferson Davis, Johnston's surrender, the trial and execution of the Lincoln conspirators and her first meeting with the great men of the Confederacy. The journal also contains newspaper clippings and cartes-de-visite of John Wilkes Booth, Lewis Payne, the chair in which Lincoln was shot, and a patriotic image of George Washington greeting Lincoln in heaven.

The collection contains a photocopy of a journal of reminiscences written by Joshua Hoyet Frier from 1895 to 1903. It is entitled "Reminiscences of the War Between the States by a Boy in the Far South at Home and in the Rank of the Confederate Militia." Frier's memoirs vividly describe the period immediately before and during the Civil War. It documents his service in the First Florida Reserves from 1864 to 1865.
