Born in the Western N.C. mountains to a Baptist minister and his wife, seventh of fourteen children. Earned his law degree at Wake Forest. Opened law practice in Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and later founded Capitol Broadcasting Company in Raleigh, N.C. During the late 1940's he gathered support for and established the Grass Roots Opera company to take opera to rural areas, to introduce young people to opera, and give young singers professional experience. As the company grew and began to tour in other parts of the United States, the name was changed from "Grassroots Opera" to "National Opera Company". Fletcher died in 1979. After his death, the Alfred J. Fletcher Foundation continued supporting the arts, particularly music in educational institutions.

The Southern Life Insurance Company Records document a wide variety of marketing and administrative functions. Various series chart in great detail the administrative, financial, and marketing activities of the company. The large (5.75 cubic feet) and important Corporate Secretary series provides much information on upper-echelon decision making. Among the significant files in this series are the minutes of Executive, Finance, Management, and Retirement Plan Committees. The two series entitled 'Annual Statements' (Series 1) and 'Reports on Examination' (Series 6) furnish copious financial data pertaining to Southern Life's assets, investments, and operations. Series 4, Internal Publication, contains a relatively complete run of in-house publications such as "Field News" and "Currents." These newsletters detail the month-by-month development of Southern Life's sales force and provide biographical information on many individual agents and managers. Another prominent feature of this record group is its extensive (9 cubic feet) collection of photographs and slides. Stored separately from the processed files, this material documents ceremonial occasions, home office personnel and activities, and sales conferences. Of special interest is Series 5, O. Henry Festival, which documents Southern Life's participation in events commemorating Greensboro native William Sydney Porter, including the company's sponsorship of a statue of the famed author. Correspondents of this collection include: Wilbur L. Carter Sr., Wilbur L. Carter Jr., T. Clyde Collins Sr., T. Clyde Collins Jr., James F. Goodman, A. J. Fletcher, Charles T. Hagan Jr., Charles T.
