Discussions of Illinois candidates including John Reynolds, Elias Kent Kane, Pierre Menard, Jesse Burgess Thomas, Edward Coles, Matthew Duncan, Joseph Duncan, Thomas Ford, David J. Baker, Abraham Lincoln and many others. Letters from John McLean, Daniel Pope Cook, Thomas C. Browne, and David Barton. Letters pertaining to the state bank issue, the investigation of the bank at Edwardsville, and the conduct of bank directors and their loan to Judge Smith. Much material related to other banks in Illinois and a letter from John A. McClernand re: opposition to the state bank. Letters related to his Shawneetown press as well as presses at Belleville, Alton, Kaskaskia, and Vincennes. More than a few items related to the sale of slaves, proof of freedom, and the return of lost slaves. Over 30 items re: Massac, the surveying of the town, sale of lots, rivalry with Metropolis, settling of German families and other issues.
