Title: Ruffin, Roulhac, and Hamilton Family, 1784-1951

Ruffin, Roulac, and Hamilton family members resided chiefly in eastern and central North Carolina, but also in Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama. Prominent among them were Thomas Ruffin (1787-1870), Anne M. Kirkland Ruffin (b. 1794), Joseph Blount Gregoire Roulhac (1795-1856), Catherine Ruffin Roulhac (b. 1810), and Daniel Heyward Hamilton, Jr. (b. 1838). The collection includes correspondence, financial and legal papers, account books, photographs, and other items, chiefly 1823-1890, relating to members of the Ruffin, Roulhac, and Hamilton families and their friends and associates. The papers relate to routine family matters and everyday life, and, to a lesser extent, to business matters, including the Ruffin plantations in North Carolina and Joseph Blount Gregoire Roulhac's career as a merchant in Raleigh, to the Civil War and Reconstruction, and to various public concerns. There are few items relating to Thomas Ruffin's legal and judicial career. The collection also contains photographs, carte-de-visite photographs, ambrotypes, daguerreotypes, tintypes, and sketches of members of the Ruffin and Roulhac families, friends, unidentified people, buildings, and Civil War naval engagements. There is also a mid-1850s daguerreotype of the sophomore class at the University of North Carolina, the earliest known image of a group of students at UNC.

Richmond Mumford Pearson Papers, 1796-1877

Title: Richmond Mumford Pearson Papers, 1796-1877

Richmond Mumford Pearson, who lived successively in Rowan, Davie, and Surry (later Yadkin) counties, N.C., was a lawyer, legislator, Superior and Supreme Court judge, chief justice of North Carolina, 1858-1878, a noted teacher of law, a unionist Whig, and, after the Civil War, a Republican. This small collection of Pearson's papers includes correspondence with physicians and others about the mental illness of his first wife; with his brothers, sisters, and children about family and plantation life; with his second wife, Mary (McDowell) Bynum Pearson; and with his son-in-law, Daniel Gould Fowle, lawyer of Raleigh, N.C., later governor of North Carolina. Also, scattered papers related to personal finances, property, and estate settlements, and a few items pertaining to judicial and political affairs, several of them during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.

Papers, chiefly 1872-1912, pertaining to Pearson's public activities, especially congressional campaigns, Republican-Populist fusion, and the Progressive campaign, with little on legislative and foreign service. Also included are Pearson's accounts as executor of the estate of his father, Richmond Mumford Pearson (1805-1878); and scrapbooks of clippings relating to a controversy over a stock and fence law and challenges to duels, and on Pearson's campaigns and legislative service.

The collection includes several letters written to Nehemiah and Catherine by his half-brothers, their children, and other Pearson relatives. They relate family news and describe their frontier farming activities. In addition, the collection contains a petition by Sterling residents to construct a wall around the burial grounds, family records taken from a Bible, a manuscrit pamphlet of "Articles of Faith" for 1786 which contains family records, and the will and legal correspondence concerning the estate of Merrick Pearson ( -1877) (possibly Nehemiah's son), who was a foreman of a lumber business in Danville, Quebec Province,Canada. Several birthday greetings and poems written to and by Charles Bell Pearson (1822-1909) are included with the papers.

The papers of T.D. Johnston consist chiefly of political and business correspondence in the 1870s when he was a leading Democratic member of the North Carolina legislature. Also included are Johnston's notes on the law lectures of Richmond Mumford Pearson; antebellum papers of his father, William Johnston of Waynesville in Haywood County, N.C., including a book of poems written to members of the family (on microfilm); minutes of the Spartanburg, S.C., Methodist Sunday School Relief Society, 1861-1863; a scrapbook, 1862-1864; and a typed copy of the Dillard family history. The collection does not relate to T. D. Johnston's career as a U.S. representative, 1885-1889.
