Letter, 13 Mar. 1862, to C.O., Port Royal, S.C., reporting, "When I arrived opposite Buckingham Ferry, I was fired on by Rebel Pickets. I found that we had lost our way and having no counter sign were being fired on by our own pickets as well as the rebels." Letter, 25 Mar. 1862, to C.O., Hilton Head, S.C., reporting that upon entering Bluffton (Beaufort County, S.C.), "I found the town entirely deserted with the Exception of three old Negroes"; letter, 25 May, 1862, from Mich[ae]l Donohoe, Bailey's Plantation, [Edisto Island, S.C.], requesting soap "as my men have had none this issue, and it is impossible to keep clean without it"; and letter, 21 Dec. 1862, Hilton Head, S.C., to Gov. [Nathaniel Springer] Berry, Concord, N.H., citing a need for a surgeon "who feels an interest in the cause we are fighting for."
