The Robert Benney research materials include photographs, clippings, posters, playbills, and ephemera relating to his career as a portraitist of stage and screen personalities. The bulk of the material spans 1926 to 1947, and consists of photographs, and clippings of Benney's work depicting New York stage performers in their roles. Many photographs and clippings depict entire stage scenes, and, in addition to stage actors, there are photographs and clippings of musicians, dancers, comics, and radio personalities, and a small number of items relating to films of the period.

Howard E. Potter, who died in 1961 at age 84, promoted concerts in the United States for musicians and theatre personalities. Correspondence received by Mr. Potter; and clippings. Correspondents include: Geraldine Farrar, Elsie Janis, Rafael Kubelik, Nellie Melba (photocopy only), Lauritz Melchior, Fritzi Scheff, and Maggie Teyte. 1 clipping is about a Melba concert in Raleigh, NC, in 1914.

Letter addressed "Dear Willie" and with accompanying envelope addressed to W. Jefferson Winter. Largely concerns movie acting. Refers to Fiske's bankruptcy and his plan to enter the movies; also references Fritzi Scheff's plans to enter the movies: "truly the movies seem to be the only thing - the real thing." Mentions seeing Florence Reed and Fuller Mellish in "The dancing girl."

Alfred Frueh caricatures, 1906-1962

Title: Alfred Frueh caricatures 1906-1962

Caricaturist, cartoonist and illustrator, Alfred Frueh, was born in Lima, Ohio in 1880. In his early career, he worked at the St. Louis post-dispatch and the New York world. From 1908 to 1909, Frueh studied art in Europe. In 1925, Frueh joined the staff of the New Yorker magazine, which published his work until 1962. Frueh died in Sharon, Connecticut in 1968. Black and white original caricatures and color linocuts of theatrical productions and personalities. Many of the caricatures of theatrical productions appeared in the New Yorker magazine between 1925 and 1962. Productions depicted include: The children's hour by Lillian Hellman, 1934 and 1953; Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin, 1942 and 1953; Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, 1923 and 1935; Twentieth century by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur (based on a play by Charles Bruce Milholland), 1933 and 1951; and the 1934 and 1936 editions of the Ziegfeld follies. Also included are 2 caricatures of the motion picture, City lights, 1931, with Charlie Chaplin, and 1 caricature of the Ziegfeld Theatre exterior, depicting the tower of the building as a woman's leg and foot, 1929.

Collection contains materials collected by Slonimsky throughout his lifetime that document his life and work as musicologist, composer, conductor, lecturer and author. Included are personal biographical materials; Slonimsky's writings (drafts, typescripts, reprints, etc.) of newspaper, periodical, journal, and magazine articles, record liner notes, radio broadcasts, and talks, published and unpublished; music composed by Slonimsky, manuscript and printed; concert programs; correspondence, among many others, with Henry Cowell, Alexandre Gretchaninoff, Roy Harris, Charles Ives, and Edgar Varèse; biographical materials on composers and performers mosly generated when Slonimsky was editing Baker's and The international cyclopedia; music collected by Slonimsky, manuscript and printed and multi-composer collections; among the manuscripts are many short holographic works and fragments; scrapbooks; and iconographical material, such as family photographs an those of composers and musicians from the former Soviet Union, as well as little known musicians from the United States and elsewhere.
