A transcription of the journal of the proceedings of the Scotch American Company of Farmers, giving a history of the company from 1772 through 1783. There is also a "Bond of association for the company" which was recorded by James Whitelaw, the company's clerk, on September 11, 1781. Also included are minutes from a meeting of the company in 1793 and a list of accounts from 1785-1822. Following these records, pasted into the book, are newspaper clippings of a series of articles entitled "First Settlers of Ryegate" by George Masson, a "scotchman," as well as a newspaper article dating from around 1895 with the title "Ryegate! Where granite is found in the hills and granite also in the make-up of the people." The final portion of the book contains genealogical information relating to the Henderson family of Ryegate, Vermont.

Whitelaw, James, 1748-1829. Bradford, Vermont, deeds, receipts, etc., 1793-1839.

Title: Bradford, Vermont, deeds, receipts, etc., 1793-1839.

This collection is mainly comprised of land transactions relating to Moses Muzzey. It contains a deed dated 1795-1797 detailing a land sale transaction to Moses Muzzey from John Barron, who was originally sold the remaining unsettled land in Bradford, VT by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont in 1791. Also included is a document with an inventory of the property of the estate of Moses Muzzey of Bradford, VT dated July 10th, 1839. Additionally a receipt from the treasurer's office in Woodstock dated the 6th of June, 1803 denotes tax paid by Moses Muzzey. A land transfer deed signifies the sale of a tract of land in Topsham, VT from Reuben Gleason to Comfort Fuller of Royalston, Massachusetts dated the 18th of November, 1806. Another deed describes the sale of a tract of land in Bradford, VT from Andrew Post of Lebanon, New Hampshire to Moses Muzzey and Jeremiah Tabor of Bradford, VT dated December 25, 1810. Edward Pratt bought a tract of land in Bradford, VT from Gardner Kellogg on September 14th, 1811, which was then sold to Moses Muzzey on August 16th, 1813 according to two more land deeds. Moses Muzzey later purchased land in Bradford, VT from William Pratt on August 26th, 1824. Andrew A. Sweet sold a tract of land in Bradford, VT to Moses Muzzey on December 14, 1824. Ephraim Bartlett sold a piece of land in Bradford, VT to Moses Muzzey on August 8th, 1826. Moses Muzzey also bought a tract of land in Dalton, New Hampshire from Samuel Willard of Dalton, New Hamsphire on July 5th, 1827. On April 1st, 1835 Moses Muzzey purchased land in Bradford, VT from Albert Heath of Bradford, VT. Also included in the collection is a tax bill dated April 25th, 1837 addressed to the Surveyor of Highways, Moses Muzzey, authorizing him to collect taxes in specific amounts from nine landowners in Bradford, VT for the purpose of making and repairing roads and bridges. There is also a short biographic description of John Rand of Topsham, VT who served under Capt. Sargent for three months in 1776.

Five letters written by James Whitelaw in either Ryegate or Guildhall, Vermont to William McCrackan of New Haven, Connecticutt concerning land interests. There are also three tax receipts for land purchased in Guildhall, Vermont in 1800, 1801, and 1806.

Whitelaw, James, 1748-1829. [Map of northern Vermont].

Whitelaw succeeded Ira Allen as Vermont's surveyor general in 1787 and held the office until 1804. While in office he continued his private surveying and planned for a map of the entire state. The note on his Vermont printed map of 1796 almost exactly describes this manuscript when he states: "The outlines of the townships of Orwell, Cornwall, Salisbury, Goshen, Hancock, Rochester, Bethel, Royalton, Sharon and Norwich, & all north of them are laid down from correct surveys made under the direction of the surveyor general, between the years 1783 and 1790."
