Papers of William Clark (d. 1791), a cousin of George Rogers Clark, who served in the Illinois Regiment and as commissioner and surveyor of the Illinois grant; and of George Rogers Clark's younger brother, also named William Clark (1770-1838), who was one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, governor of the Missouri Territory (1813-1821), and superintendent of Indian affairs at St. Louis (1822-1838). Papers of the elder William Clark include correspondence (1777-1791), pertaining to his service in the Illinois Regiment, administration of the Illinois grant, and the development of Clarksville, Kentucky and Clarksville, Indiana (including maps). Correspondents include his father Benjamin Clark, Richard C. Anderson, John Armstrong, Daniel Brodhead, Richard Butler, Abraham Chapline, Valentine Dalton, John Dodge, John Edwards, James Harrod, Gilbert Imlay, Harry Innes, John Montgomery, John Rogers, Arthur St. Clair, Robert Todd, and John Williams. Letters (1782-1790) of John Girault in New Orleans and Natchez concern economic conditions and relations with the Spanish in the lower Mississippi River valley. Also includes a letterbook (1782-1789), primarily of letters written to John Girault, a ledger (1784-1785) and daybook (1787-1791), muster rolls, supply inventories, and land survey notes. Papers of the younger William Clark (1770-1838) include material on midwestern Indian affairs, 1814-1822, primarily messages delivered in 1815 to representatives of the Chippewa (Ojibwa), Kickapoo, Menominee, Potawatomi, and Sauk and Fox (Meskwaki) tribes signed by Clark, Auguste Chouteau, and Illinois territorial governor Ninian Edwards. Also includes the journal, May 14-August 17, 1804, of Charles Floyd, a sergeant with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The bulk of the papers in this series are those of the elder William.

The collection contains papers and correspondence, notebooks, daybooks, and ledgers. Armstrong's papers deal with his military career, and include letters and reports to James Wilkinson, Arthur St. Clair, and Anthony Wayne; and accounts and orders for Forts Pitt, Finney, Hamilton, and Washington. Topics include military supplies and relations with Indians and settlers. Business papers concern his mercantile business and land speculation and include account books for his general store. Other materials deal with his service as Northwest Territory treasurer and Justice of the Peace of Hamilton County, Ohio; and items regarding claims of a member of George Rogers Clark's Illinois expedition. Also included are papers of Armstrong's father-in-law, William Goforth, dealing with his businesses in New York City and Cincinnati; and court records from Hamilton County, Ohio, where he was a judge. Papers of Armstrong's son, William G., include correspondence with his mother, Tabitha Armstrong Lockhart, and other family; correspondence concerning the Whig Party in Indiana; and papers relating to the Jeffersonville Railroad Company. Also included is family correspondence of William G. Armstrong, Jr., and notes of Armstrong's biographer, Charles F. Cochran.

Typescript copies of correspondence and documents relating to the Armstrong's of Georgia and especially to John Armstrong's expedition up the Missouri River in 1790. Includes a copy of a letter from John Armstrong, Port Vincent (i.e Vincennes), Indiana, to Colonel Richard C. Anderson, Louisville, Kentucky, 1787 August 8, presenting his respects to General George Rogers Clark, James Merriweather, Major William Crochan (Croghan) and others; skirmishes with Indians near mouth of Wabash River; is of opinion that some troops will be transferred to Kaskaskia, Illinois, following the return of Colonel Josiah Harmar from a projected trip there; describes site and situation; lists benefits of establishment of Vincennes. Also a description by Cochran of the origin of this letter and of the letter of October 28 or 23?, 1791 from Armstrong to Anderson. Also includes correspondence between Cochran and Dr. Thwaites from 1905 discussing John Armstrong and his expedition.

The collection is divided into sections: Northwest Territory; Indiana; the War of 1812; Samuel Hodgdon; and Autographs. The Northwest Territory and Indiana segments consist mainly of correspondence, receipts, land surveys, and autographs generated by military and government officials, and Indiana governors between 1755 and 1837. The War of 1812 section includes papers of James Taylor, quartermaster of the 8th Military District (1795-1847). Other papers in this section include autographs of prominent men, including Henry Dearborn, William Eustis, and John Armstrong. The Samuel Hodgdon papers concern Washington politics from the 1790s to the 1840s. The Autographs section includes signers of the Declaration of Independence, and presidential documents and autographs from the 1770s to the 1930s. Other material includes survey reports, and the journal of Indian agent John Sibley (1807). Harrison family material is dispersed throughout the collection. Graphics include engravings of prominent American men of the 18th and 19th centuries.
