Esther McCoy papers
Esther McCoy papers
Title:
Esther McCoy papers
The papers of Southern California architectural historian, critic, and writer Esther McCoy measure 44.0 linear feet and date from 1876 to 1990 (bulk 1938-1989). McCoy was interested in both Italian and Mexican architecture as well as the folk art and crafts of Mexico and South America. The collection documents McCoy's career, as well as her family and personal life through biographical material, extensive correspondence, personal and professional writings, project files, Southern California architects' files, clippings and other printed material, a large collection of photographs and slides, and taped interviews of Southern California modern architects. Biographical and family material consists of awards, resumes, identification documents, and other documentation of McCoy's personal life. Included are a transcript of a 1984 interview of McCoy by Makoto Watanabe and material relating to her friend, Theodore Dreiser. Correspondence focuses on her personal relationships with family, friends, and lovers, and general correspondence relating primarily to her work as a writer. McCoy's personal correspondence is valuable to researchers who are interested in her personal life, her struggles as a young writer, and the way in which her family, friends, lovers, mentors, and colleagues helped to shape her work and career. As documented in this correspondence, her life offers a glimpse into twentieth-century American social and political history, especially the radical leftist movements of the 1920s and 1930s. Researchers interested in the roots of feminism in the United States should also find these papers useful in documenting the life of a creative and productive woman who was successful in a field then almost entirely dominated by men. Correspondents of note include her husband Berkeley Tobey, lovers Geoffrey Eaton and Albert Robert, writers Ray Bradbury and Theodore Dreiser, and artists and architects, such as Dorothy Grotz, Craig Ellwood, A. Quincy Jones, Hans Hollein, and J. R. Davidson. General correspondence is primarily with researchers, professors, architects, publishers, and professional organizations. Personal writings include McCoy's diaries, notebooks, and memoirs, and writings by others including friends, lovers, and colleagues. Also included are drafts of McCoy's fictional works, both published and unpublished, including short stories, teleplays, and novels. The collection contains in-depth documentation of McCoy's pioneering study of the modernist work of twentieth-century architects in Southern California. The bulk of her papers consist of her writing files for books, exhibition catalogs, articles, and lectures on architecture. Because many of the architects about whom McCoy wrote were her contemporaries, she developed personal relationships with several of them through her research and writing. Her writing files include drafts, notes, research material, photographs, and correspondence. McCoy also traveled extensively, particularly in Italy and Mexico, and wrote about architecture, craft, and culture in those countries. Project files document McCoy's other activities related to architectural history, such preservation projects, juries, grants, the Dodge House Preservation Campaign and related film project, her work for the Society of Architectural Historians and the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), and her work at the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Planning, compiling a slide library and cataloging the Richard Neutra's papers. McCoy also maintained architect files which may contain correspondence, notes, photographs, research material, interview transcripts, about architects and their works. Among these extensive records, the files documenting the careers of R. M. Schindler, Irving Gill, Richard Neutra, and Juan O'Gorman are particularly rich. Printed material in this collection documents McCoy's career as well as her personal interests. Included are books, clippings, magazines, newsletters, press releases, as well as publications arranged by subject such as architecture, art, Italy, and Mexico. McCoy also collected literary and leftist publications. The small amount of artwork in this collection consists of artwork sent to her by friends, including a drawing of her by Esther Rollo and etchings by various artists including Thomas Worlidge. There are personal photographs of family and friends and of McCoy at different times in her life, as well as photographs gathered during the course of her research on architecture. Found here are photographs of architects and their works, including a large number depicting the work of Gregory Ain, Luis Barragan, J. R. Davidson, Irving Gill, Bernard Maybeck, Juan O'Gorman, R. M. Schindler, and Raphael Soriano. Many of these photographs were taken by notable architectural photographers Julius Shulman and Marvin Rand. Also found are photographs of architecture designed for the Case Study House program of <emph render="italic">Arts & Architecture </emph>magazine; exhibition photographs, primarily for the exhibition "Ten Italian Architects" in 1967; and other research photographs primarily documenting architecture and craft in other countries and the history of architecture in California. This series also includes approximately 3,600 slides of architecture. Audio and video recordings include a videocassette of McCoy's 80th birthday party and 55 taped interviews with architects, people associated with architectural projects, and artists.

Papers of Alice Parsons Millard, c.1890-1991 (bulk 1927-1938)
The collection contains 128 semi-cataloged items housed in two boxes (with one oversize volume). The majority of the collection deals with Alice Parsons Millard's estate and assets at the time of her death. There are documents and five volumes of inventories of the house and "museum," as well as 52 inventory note cards. These inventories list items (including furniture, books, etc.) owned by the Millards and often include the price they paid for it and/or the price for which they sold it. There is also a twelve-page, typed memoir of Alice Parsons Millard by Lucille V. Miller (1984). The correspondence includes 8 pieces, seven of which were written by Alice Parsons Millard. Many of the letters and postcards were written while Alice was abroad. One of her letters is to her client, collector Estelle Doheny. The photographs consist of 54 black and white photographs (and two negatives) of the following: the Millard's Highland Park house, the exterior and interior of "La Miniatura," the house's exhibits, and the South Pasadena House. There are also several personal photographs of Alice Parsons Millard, George Millard and various family members. There are three pieces of ephemera including Alice Parsons Millard's passport (1926) and copies of two of her obituaries (1938). The oversize guest book begins in 1924 and has 31 pages of visitors' inscriptions. Several notable people are in this volume including: Albert and Elsa Einstein (they visited in 1932 and 1933), Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Title:
Leonard Nadel photographs and other material relating to housing and urban redevelopment in Los Angeles, 1947-1998 (bulk 1947-1957)
The collection consists of negatives, contact prints, notes, unpublished books, and related documents produced by Leonard Nadel from 1948-1953, just prior to and during the period when he worked as a documentary photographer for the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA). Series I consists primarily of negatives, contact prints, and notes that Nadel produced while working for HACLA, and on related urban development, public housing, and slum documentation projects. In addition to documentation of Los Angeles public housing projects such as Avalon Gardens, Ramona Gardens, and Basilone Homes, there are photographic surveys, sometimes block by block, of the city's slums and historic areas targeted for demolition and revitalization, including the Civic Center area, Bunker Hill, Elysian Park, and Chávez Ravine. Several of these projects were championed by or carried out under the auspices of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). There are photographs of the planning meetings of city officials and architects (including Richard Neutra, Robert Alexander, and Lloyd Wright), urban redevelopment commission tours, hearings, and conferences. Also included are a few photographs of slums in New York, as well as a small amount of material related to Frank Wilkinson, the assistant director of HACLA, who was fired from the organization in 1953 after refusing to disclose his political affiliations to the California Anti-Subversive Committee, a copy of the The 8th, 9th, and 10th consolidated annual report of the Housing Authority of Los Angeles illustrated with photographs by Nadel and other HACLA photographers, and a copy of And ten thousand more, the 1949 University of Southern California Student Film produced for HACLA. Series II contains Nadel's photographic materials and notes on Pueblo del Rio and Aliso Village, his largest photographic projects of the late 1940s. He documented Pueblo del Rio in 1947 and 1948, and then went on to photograph Aliso Village in 1948 and 1949. Also included are the two large leather-bound volumes he compiled based on this material. Through photographs and text, these books tell in detail the stories of the two housing projects, focusing not just on the architecture and layout of the complexes, but also recording the family lives and project-supported social networks of the tenants. In 1949 he made a trip to Washington, D.C. and New York City to meet with supporters and potential publishers for his book Aliso Village, U.S.A. The related correspondence and Nadel's meeting notes are included in this series. Although there was interest in these photographic projects, the books were never published.

Frank Lloyd Wright correspondence with R. M. Schindler 1914-1929 1918-1922
The association between the architects Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) and R. M. Schindler (1887-1953) began in 1914 when Schindler first wrote to Wright asking for a position, and revolved around two major commissions while Schindler worked for Wright: the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, known as Teikoku Hoteru (1913-1923), and the Barnsdall project, which includes Hollyhock house, in Los Angeles (1915-1924). Correspondence between Frank Lloyd Wright and R. M. Schindler contains approximately 160 items, primarily letters and telegrams, dating from 1914 (the year Schindler came to the United States from Vienna) to 1929.

The photographs, primarily of mid-twentieth century Los Angeles area domestic architecture, were taken by C. Gregory Walsh while he was a student at the USC School of Architecture. Many of the photographs show buildings of recent construction, as evidenced by minimal landscaping and the lack of surrounding homes. Architects represented include Richard Neutra, John Lautner, A. Quincy Jones, Craig Ellwood, Gregory Ain, and Lloyd Wright. There are photographs of the Ellwood and Whitney R. Smith designed houses in the Crestwood Hills community. Also included are photographs of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings that Walsh took on a trip to the Chicago area and Wisconsin.

Peter Blake architectural records and papers, 1910-2006 (bulk 1980-2002).
This collection contains materials related to a full range of Blake's personal, professional, and academic lives. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1980s through the early 2000s. His professional and faculty papers document many of his interests, and primarily include published and unpublished lectures and articles. Although Blake delivered his lectures at various architectural schools in the United States and abroad, the specific locations of the lectures are not usually recorded on the documents. In addition, many articles he wrote for publication appear as annotated typescripts. There are also significant papers related to publication of his memoir No Place Like Utopia (Knopf, 1993), including correspondence and some production records. Throughout the professional and faculty papers are also found a large number of reference files relating to modern architecture, art, design, urbanism, technology, and current events, compiled over many decades. The collection also contains correspondence with personal friends, clients, and professional and academic colleagues. There is an especially significant amount of correspondence and clippings related to Patwant Singh, a Sikh writer, commentator, journalist, editor, and publisher, with whom Blake was a close friend. There are also many materials including correspondence, typescripts, and book production records related to Philip Johnson and Paul Rudolph, with whom Blake was also close. Architectural project records include original and reprographic drawings and photographs for 40 residential and institutional designs, located primarily in New York City and the surrounding region. Of particular note are drawings and papers related to Blake's important Pin Wheel House (1954) in Water Mill, New York. In addition, there are drawings related to the American National Exhibition in Moscow (1959). Finally, there is a significant number of drawings, photographs, and correspondence related to the Benjamin Gerson Residence (1999-2003) in Johnsonburg, New Jersey, one of Blake's last architectural projects.

Title:
Leonard Nadel photographs and other material relating to housing and urban redevelopment in Los Angeles 1947-1998 (bulk 1947-1957)
The collection consists of negatives, contact prints, notes, two unpublished books, and related documents produced by the photojournalist Leonard Nadel primarily between 1947-1957, which includes the period when he worked as a documentary photographer for the Los Angeles Housing Authority (HACLA). This material records the city of Los Angeles's mid-century efforts to promote public housing for its growing multi-ethnic population. It also includes Nadel's documentation of the existing slum housing in areas that the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) had targeted for commericial revitalization in the late 1940s through the mid-1950s.
