Robert Johnson, containing Johnson's correspondence with British officials in London, and with those seeking his legal assistance; including letters, 17 June 1732, St. James' Place [London], Peter Lehup to Robert Johnson, re financial disagreement between Lehup and James St. John, Surveyor General of South Carolina; and 6 Oct. 1732, Charles Town, S.C., Johnson's reply to Lehup, including affidavits, 26 Aug. and 4 Oct. 1732, of John Carlton and Andrew Rutledge, re St. John's behavior. Other papers document political developments in London and in South Carolina after the 1719 transition from Proprietary to Crown colony; including letters, 27 and 28 Sept. 1732, to Mr. Hutcheson, Mr. [Peregeine] Fury, and Lords of Trade, re his concern over the expected veto of quitrent and appropriation laws, and his fear that the people would resist paying the quitrents as in New England; 29 Oct. 1732, to Mr. Hutcheson, St. John, and Whitiker, re hardships suffered by Carolina subjects under the new regime, and expressing concern over the influence of St. John and Thomas Lowndes in prejudicing Horace Walpole to favor unpopular laws; and 18 Nov. 1732, to Mr. Hutcheson, re concern over St. John usurping the authority of the governor and council, and mentioning Jean Pierre Purry and his settlement of Purrysburgh, with 150 Swiss Protestant settlers.

The portion of the Emmet Collection housed in the Manuscripts and Archives Division consists of approximately 10,800 historical manuscripts relating chiefly to the period prior to, during, and following the American Revolution. The collection contains letters and documents by the signers of the Declaration of Independence as well as nearly every prominent historical figure of the period.
