Letters (01-028) to Mrs. Lucien P. (Francis Harrison) Haw, primarily from her fiancee/husband, but also from other relatives and friends. Lucien Haw's letters date from their courtship and marriage (94 items), and discuss railroad business, including the behavior of African-American railroad workers; plans for their wedding; his longing for his wife; and gatherings with friends and family. His letter requesting permission from James Harrison to marry Francis is also included. Francis's mother (19 items) wrote to her daughter when Francis was attending school in Washington D.C. The letters describe the mother's battle with a terminal illness, her experiments with medical treatments, her decision to become a Christian Scientist, and her social and moral expectations for her daughter. James Harrison's letters to his daughter (13 items) detail local events, his work as a contractor/painter, his experience as a widower with young children, and his advice on marriage and pregnancy. Topics found in letters from Francis's cousin, Lou (Louise Harrison) (7 items), include Lou's work for the U.S. Forest Service; her membership in the Pocahontas Memorial Association; the death of Francis's mother and the birth of Francis's child; plans for possible visits; and social engagements.
