Papers of the Robie and Sewall families include those of Samuel Sewall (1652-1740); typed copies of letters between Jonathan Sewall and Thomas Robie, loyalists who emigrated to Canada; genealogical material; and letters among Robie and Sewall family members, among them Mary R. Sewall and her husband Joseph Sewall, Simon B. Robie, Hannah Robie, and Mehetable Higginson. The papers of Samuel E. Sewall, lawyer and abolitionist, and his wife, poet Harriet W. Sewall, contain correspondence concerning the anti-slavery movement and the causes leading to the Civil War. Among their correspondents are Lydia M. Child, Samuel J. May, Wendell Phillips, and Charles Sumner, as well as literary figures including Louisa M. Alcott, Julia W. Howe, Harriet B. Stowe, and Ralph W. Emerson. (Cont.) Also, William E. Channing's letters to Samuel E. Sewall; letters to Louisa S. Cabot from Lucy Larcom and others; letters to Charles List, first husband of Harriet Winslow, from Charles F. Adams (1807-1886); and letters of Hinton R. Helper and James F. Clarke.

Letters (some as copies only) from Jonathan Sewall primarily written to his cousin Thomas Robie. Both Sewall and Robie left America during the American Revolution as loyalists to England, Sewall to England and Robie to Halifax, N.S. Their letters date from years prior to the Revolution, including some from Robie to Sewall and others under the pseudonym "Lindamira," through the war years, and beyond when Sewall moved to St. John, New Brunswick while Robie remained in Halifax. Their letters primarily concern their feelings about the war, the new government, and personal matters. Other recipients include Simon Bradstreet.

Manuscripts collected by Charles Lowell regarding colonial New England, politics, and the Revolutionary War. In particular, the papers of politicians: Lowell's father John Lowell, Joshua Brackett, Joseph Whipple, William Whipple, and James Lovell. Topics discussed include relations of the colonies with England (1729); a plan of union for the colonies for their mutual defense and security; politics; and financial and other aspects of the Revolution, in particular New Hampshire's strained financial situation as a result of the war. Also, the Declaration of Independence, a state lottery in Pennsylvania to raise money for the cause, Shays's Rebellion, West Indian imports to the United States, and the U.S. court system. Correspondents include Thomas Dwight, Robert Traill, William Cushing, Theodore Sedgwick, Samuel Sewall, Jeremy Belknap, Robert Morris, Caleb Strong, and Jonathan Sewall.
