Chiefly research files re Strom Thurmond's political and judicial activities, including study of death sentences imposed by Thurmond, ca. 1938-1946, during his tenure as a state circuit judge; cases researched: George Abney (Saluda County, S.C.), J.C. Hann (Pickens County, S.C.), Sammie Osbourne (Barnwell County, S.C.); George Thomas (Georgetown County, S.C.); and George Stinney, Jr., a 14-year-old youth from Clarendon County, S.C., executed in 1944. Includes copies of essays written by Bruck: The Four Men Strom Thurmond Sent to the Chair (Washington Post, 26 Apr. 1981); Strom Thurmond's Roots (The New Republic, 3 Mar. 1982); and Executing Teenage Killers Again (Washington Post, 15 Sept. 1983). Also includes 4 page tabloid broadside promoting special election scheduled for 15 June 1965 in which Albert Watson (1922-1994) ran as a Republican and won back his seat in the U.S. House; published by South Carolina Independents, the flyer states: "The South Under Attack! King, LBJ drive for total power bloc ... Stand Up For the Man Who Stood Up for You. Support Albert Watson"; includes images of Albert Watson, James T. McCain, and James Farmer; Watson had represented South Carolina in the U.S. House, serving as a Democrat from 1962 until his resignation in early 1965; Watson was stripped of his seniority in 1965 as punishment for supporting Barry Goldwater's campaign for President in 1964 [stored onsite, Pob].

Edward G. Ramberg Papers, 1916-1994

Title: Edward G. Ramberg Papers 1916-1994

A physicist and social activist, Edward G. Ramberg contributed to the early development of electron microscopy and color television, and devoted much of his life to pacifist and Quaker causes. Born in Italy to an American mother and German father, Ramberg experienced the losses of war firsthand during the First World War when his father was killed while serving with the German army. After moving to the United States with his mother, Ramberg attended Reed College and Cornell University before returning to Germany for postdoctoral study under Arnold Sommerfeld. Employed at RCA for most of his career (1935-1972), Ramberg refused any involvement in military or war-related research, and as a conscientious objector during the Second World War, was assigned to duty in Civilian Public Service camps. He continued to work in fostering social harmony until late in life. With his wife, Sarah Sargent, a Swarthmore graduate whom he met through the American Friends Service Committee, Ramberg helped to establish Bryn Gweled, a cooperative community in which people of various religious, social, and racial backgrounds lived and worked together. The bulk of the Ramberg papers consists of files pertaining to his work with Amnesty International, the American Friends Service Committee, and peace groups in the Philadelphia and Bucks County region. Of particular note is a bundle of correspondence with Sommerfeld.
