Photographs of Henry Davis Minot [HDM], ornithologist, artist, and railroad executive, best known as the first president of the Eastern Minnesota railroad. One narrow box of loose photographs includes portraits of HDM as a child and as an adult, as well as various Minot family members and friends; several souvenir carte de visite photographs of England and France; and various images of birds. Subjects of the portraits include HDM's friends and classmates at Harvard University (including Henry Eliot Guild, Francis James Child, and Theodore Roosevelt), Alice Woodburn Minot, Charles Sedgwick Minot, Katharine Sedgwick Minot, Laurence Minot, Mary Minot, and William Minot, among others. The photographs include cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and tintypes and were taken by George Kendall Warren (of Cambridge, Mass.) and James Notman, William Notman, John Adams Whipple, Allen & Horton, and Allen & Rowell (all of Boston, Mass.).

Minot family papers, 1658-1933, include correspondence, genealogical material, writings, sermons, printed material and newspaper clippings, manuscript drafts of George Richards Minot's works on Massachusetts history, and papers related to the settlements of the estates of Stephen Minot and Sarah Minot. Also included are blueprints for Henry D. Minot's Readville, Mass. house, stock certificates, drawings and watercolor paintings by Mary and Louisa Davis Minot, and a small undated pocket diary kept by Julia Minot while traveling in England, France, and Italy. Correspondents include Stephen Minot, George Richards Minot, George Ricahrds Minot, Jr., John Minot, Julia Minot, Harriet Jackson Minot, Fisher Ames, Ezekial Freeman, Nehemiah Freeman, Constant Freeman, William Taylor, Nathaniel Taylor, and Julia P. Hamner. Part of this collection contains the papers of loyalist and Quebec merchant Constant Freeman and his sons, Nehemiah and Ezekial Freeman. The connection between the Minots and the Freemans is unclear.

Title: Henry Davis Minot papers, 1825-1891.

The papers of noted ornithologist and railroad executive, Henry Davis Minot, 1825-1891, consist of correspondence, letterbooks, school notebooks, diaries, business papers, maps, printed materials, watercolors, sketches, and photographs. Personal papers contain correspondence with family members including his parents William Minot and Katharine Sedgwick Minot, as well as siblings Laurence Minot and William Minot III, and Harvard University classmate Theodore Roosevelt. Also included are diaries of travels to England and Scotland, 1879, Colorado, 1880, and Dakota and Minnesota, 1882; tributes and obituaries upon Henry's death; writings; memoranda's and extensive household inventories kept by Henry regarding Woodbourne; the family vacation house in West Roxbury, Mass.; receipts; and printed material and newspaper clippings. Ornithology papers, 1876-90, contain correspondence relating to his book, essays, and a bird watching journal. Also included are Minot's business papers, 1882-91, relating to his work for the Great Northern Railway Company, consisting of correspondence, investment and financial reports, and printed material.

Papers of Alice Woodbourne Minot, 1860-83, include correspondence with her parents William and Katharine Sedgwick Minot and brothers William and Henry regarding daily activities, family news, her trip to Europe, 1868-69, and condolence letters upon the death of her mother. Most of the letters are written by Alice from various locations including England, France, Germany, Italy, North Conway, New Hampshire, Nahant, Lenox, and at Woodbourne, the family home in West Roxbury, Mass. Two diaries kept sporadically, 1868-83, while traveling through Europe describe daily activites, cultural institutions visited, and life at home in West Roxbury during the final days of her mother's life.
