Primarily Civil War correspondence from Pettit to his family and friends describing daily life in the Union Army, as well as battles (including Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg), troop movements, his experiences in the field hospital at Fredericksburg after he was wounded at Gettysburg, and political developments both at home and abroad. Letters are sent from camps in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Also included are a few letters, 1880-1882, on the stationery of the Thomas Asylum for Orphan and Destitute Indian Children in Versailles, New York, describing conditions there.

The Fortress Monroe items consist mainly of correspondence and invoices relevant to its construction and maintenance. The letters are addressed to Lieutenant Colonel Charles Gratiot, Lieutenant Andrew Talcott, and Lieutenant Colonel Rene E. DeRussy. The soldiers' letters relate to numerous family members. The voucher is from Virginia to Major J.E. Johnson for his pay while serving in the Provisional Army of Virginia, 1861. Three items are miscellaneous letters involving Ann G.O. Dick, Jessee F. Keesee, Truman Smith, W.W. Hatchett, or Sherman Burdick.

This collection is comprised of over 200 letters which makes up the bulk of the James M. Pettit papers.The letters date from as early as 1816 and as late as 1903, however, the bulk of the correspondences between James and members of his family and friends were written between the 1850s-1860s. There are those which were written by James to his family as well as ones that he received from his parents, sister, brother-in-law and niece, but there are also letters that James wrote and received from close friends. Pettit expounds on his struggles of the battlefields (due to illness) and his experiences during the Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg campaigns. But readers are also privy to information that describes life back home in upstate New York, activities of daily life, local political developments and even some family gossip. Overall, the letters found in this collection are in remarkably good condition.
