The collection includes correspondence of Andrew Henry Patterson and members of his family, and weather records made by Patterson. Included are family and personal letters of Patterson; his parents, Mary E. Fries and Rufus L. Patterson; and his grandparents, Phoebe Caroline Jones and Samuel F. Patterson. Among the earlier letters are some apparently written in North Carolina during the Civil War by Samuel F. Patterson and others about impressment of crops and livestock, rumors of Union Army movements, and the advisability of travel. The majority of the later letters are from Andrew H. Patterson in Chapel Hill, N.C., to his mother, giving news of his family, the University of North Carolina, and life in Chapel Hill. There are seven volumes, 1908-1920, of daily records of temperature, rain, and wind at Chapel Hill. The records were kept by Patterson as a cooperative observer for the United States Weather Bureau.

The collection is a diary, 1863-1864 and 1911, of Mary Fries Patterson. The earlier volume covers the period of Fries's engagement. Daily entries record visits from her fiance, friends, and relatives, activities at the Presbyterian and Moravian churches, meetings of the Relief Society, and news of Confederate soldiers, as well as her wedding preparations. Both her fiance and her father, Francis Fries, were manufacturers. Entries in the later volume, covering July-December 1911, deal with daily activities, travels, and visits.

Fries and Shaffner family papers, 1848-1919.

Title: Fries and Shaffner family papers, 1848-1919.

The collection includes personal and family correspondence of Francis Lavin Fries, his daughter Caroline ("Carrie") Louisa Fries Shaffner, and her husband John Francis ("Frank") Shaffner. There is correspondence, 1850-1860, between members of the Fries family visiting in Philadelphia and other family members at home in Salem; letters to John Francis Shaffner at Jefferson Medical College from members of the Fries family; and scattered letters from Francis Fries on business trips and while attending the North Carolina state legislature in 1858. During the Civil War period, there are letters from John Francis Shaffner with the Confederate Army in North Carolina and Virginia and letters to him from Caroline and Mary Fries describing life in Salem. Also included are letters to Caroline from Mary, after the latter's marriage and removal to Caldwell County, N.C., mostly dealing with domestic and family affairs. There are scattered business letters of John Francis Shaffner, 1868-1887. Volumes include diaries of Caroline (Fries) Shaffner, 1861-1876; surgical notes, 1862-1863, by John Francis Shaffner; his diary, 1863- 1865; and an address by him about his Civil War experiences.
