Weinerman, E. Richard (Edwin Richard), 1917-1970. Edwin Richard Weinerman papers, 1908-1970 (inclusive).

Correspondence, consultations, surveys, writings, printed material, and other papers of Edwin Richard Weinerman. Material primarily reflects Weinerman's interest in public health and deals with his activities both as a consultant and administrator with various public and private health careorganizations, including the U. S. Public Health Service, Permanente Health Plan, American Public Health Association, and the Yale-New Haven Hospital. A significant part of the collection also relates to Weinerman's social and political activities, especially his concern over dangers of air pollution, nuclear warfare and radiation poisoning, and his opposition to the House Committee on Un-American Activities and the Levering Act which required loyalty oaths as a condition for medical licensure. The papers also include notebooks and course papers from his own studies at Harvard and New York University (1945-1948) as well as teaching materials from the University of California. His professional program is documented in grant applications (1963-1972), two speeches and letters written in preparation for his trip abroad in 1970, collected works (articles), and curriculum vitae. Also in the papers are letters of condolence and a transcript and audio tapes of the memorial service at Yale University following his death in 1970. These papers form part of the Contemporary Medical Care and Health Policy Collection.

This collection of records of the Office of the Director of the Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine, 1879-1987, includes records of Ronald F. Kotrc, Director from 1977 to 1982, and Diana E. Long, Director from 1983 to 1989. Series 4 concerns the administration of the College, including memoranda from Executive Director William F. Chaveas. Series 5 contains minutes and reports from the College Council. Series 6 contains material from the Section on Medical History, such as minutes of the Executive Committee and lecture and program announcements. Also included is correspondence from Russell Charles Maulitz, Section Chairman, and Dorothy I. Lansing, Clerk. Series 7 contains information on the College's Continuing Education Program, including the typescript of an address given by President John P. Hubbard in 1977 and pamphlets. Series 8 contains correspondence between Kotrc, Bruce Fye, and Lawrence C. McHenry concerning plans for a book on S. Weir Mitchell. Also included are three articles written and signed by McHenry, and photocopies of three Mitchell bibliographies. Series 9 documents the activities of the Institute on Human Values in Medicine and Kotrc's role in planning and organizing the Institute's "Conference on the Humanities in the Clinical Setting", held at the College of Physicians in 1978. The records of Diana E. Long span 1974 to 1987. Included in Series 1 are records of the F. C. Wood Institute, including correspondence with President Brooke Roberts, financial information, and issues of "Fellows' forum". Series 2 contains material from the Historical Collections of the Library, including a proposal for cataloging the Lawrence F. Flick Pamphlet Collection and a copy of the collection development policy for 1985. Information about the finances of the College are included in Series 3, and Series 4 contains miscellaneous material.

The presidential papers of Katharine R. Sturgis span 1925 to 1986; the bulk of the collection dates from 1970 to 1974. The papers reflect the activities of the College during Sturgis' presidential term; included are records of committee meetings, lectureship administration, donations and bequests, and amendments to ordinances and by-laws. Also present is a series of correspondence with the legal counsel of the College. Series 4 provides information on lectureships and lectureship administration. Present is correspondence with lecturers, announcements, and historical notes. Also included are transcripts of lectures by Gonzalo E. Aponte, Bruno Bettelheim, Sidney Cohen, Donald B. Effler, Frank R. Ervin, Richard J. Herrnstein, Paul Kotin, Hugh L'Etang, Donald M. Small, and Stephen P. Strickland. Included in the lectureship administration records are schedules of lectures, financial statements, and membership lists of lecture committees. Records of various College committees, including the Committee on Bequests, the Greater Philadelphia Committee for Medical-Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Bicentennial Committee, the Committee on Planning, the Search Committee, and the Development Committee, are contained in Series 5. The records of the Bicentennial Committee include transcripts of lectures by Paul R. Ehrlich and René J. Dubos. Also of note are the records of the Search Committee; documented in these records is the College's 1972 search for a new executive director. Vice President John P. Hubbard is a significant correspondent. Series 6 contains miscellaneous material, including correspondence on the 1972 re-establishment of the Section on General Medicine (which had been discontinued in 1966), schedules of College meetings and events, and miscellaneous printed materials.
