James Whitall is a Haverford graduate, class of 1910.
André Maurois was a prolific French author who wrote in a variety of forms and genres. Born as Emile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog, he was educated in Rouen, but delayed his boyhood dream of becoming an author to work for the family textile business. He fought in World War I, where his exposure to British customs inspired his first novel, The Silence of Colonel Bramble, published under the pen name André Maurois. He continued to produce novels, but also wrote history, social commentary, plays, short stories, criticism, memoirs, and biography. Known as a dedicated writer with a witty, lucid style and insatiable curiosity, he also had a long and influential career as an educator. He officially changed his name to André Maurois in 1947.

Mayo, Katherine, 1868?-1940. Katherine Mayo papers, 1835-1968 (inclusive), 1918-1940 (bulk).
Title:
Katherine Mayo papers, 1835-1968 (inclusive), 1918-1940 (bulk).
Correspondence, diaries, writings, photographs, scrapbooks, research materials, and miscellanea documenting the personal life and literary career of Katherine Mayo, an author of several historical and investigative articles, essays, and books from 1896 to 1940. Correspondence files document the detailed literary research Mayo conducted and the strong public reaction generated by her writings. This is particularly true for such works as: Justice to All (1917), The Isles of Fear (1925), and Mother India (1927). Diaries provide sporadic information on the daily activities of Mayo, while writings include drafts of many works. Photographs and research materials further detail the foreign travels (South America, India, Philippines) and subsequent literary works produced by Mayo. Scrapbooks contain reviews and commentary relating to Mayo's publications. The papers provide information on such diverse topics as life in India, Philippine Islands, South America, and the Pennsylvania state police, George Washington, the Y.M.C.A. during World War I, war veterans of World War I, and the narcotics trade.

Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

Title:
Crowell-Collier Publishing Company records 1931-1955
The Crowell-Collier Publishing Company, American publishers of popular periodicals and educational and technical manuals, was incorporated in 1920 as the Crowell Publishing Company. The name was changed to Crowell-Collier in 1939, and to Crowell, Collier and Macmillan, Inc. in 1965. The firm published American Magazine, Collier's Magazine, The Country Home, Woman's Home Companion, and National Weekly. Collection consists of correspondence, readers' reports, typescripts, proofs, memoranda, and photographs relating to the publishing activities of Crowell-Collier. Records are mainly correspondence, 1931-1950, of the editors of the magazines published by the firm, with the bulk concerning Collier's and Woman's Home Companion. Editors' correspondence with authors, literary agents, photographers, and cartoonists reflects the changes in editorial policy and shifts in popular taste during the period between the early thirties and the mid-fifties. Collection also includes inter-office correspondence, 1933, 1946; readers' reports, 1933; edited authors' typescripts and editors' proofs of articles, short stories, and serialized novels published in Collier's from 1935 through 1955, with some correspondence and editorial memoranda; and a few photographs.

Title:
André Maurois' notes and French translation of Sonnets from the Portuguese [manuscript], ca. 1942-1943.
Two items ([5] loose leaves and 1 notebook): (1) Propos litteraries de la traduction des poèmes: five loose leaves of Maurois' holograph notes for his introduction to Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese (Brentanos, 1944) and his thoughts on translating poetry in general. In the introduction, he reflects: To translate a poem is difficult; to translate it into verse is almost impossible. (2) Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sonnets traduits du portugais, Traduction franc̦aise de André Maurois: Maurois' holograph notebook of his French translation of Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese and his introduction (in French) to the 1944 Brentanos' published edition (see Lilly PR4189 .A1 1944). There are a few penciled corrections to the sonnets (appearing to be "final" drafts of his translations), whereas the introduction ([7] leaves at end) bears numerous corrections and changes. Laid in the notebook are two loose printed leaves (18 x 13 cm.) of page proofs(?) (p. 79-80, 95-96, which include the French translations of sonnets XIX-XX and XXVII-XXVIII).

Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.
