Papers of Wisconsin journalist and television pioneer Sprague Vonier, covering the period 1940-1975 (but mainly 1940-1947), concerning the activities of Vonier and a close circle of friends in Milwaukee, Wis. that included Harold Gauer, Robert Vail, Henry Maier, Richard Falk, Robert Bloch, and Dan James. In addition to reflecting the group's reactions to both local and world events, the collection documents Vail and Vonier's political activities immediately before and after World War II, including their organization of a group called the United States of Young Americans, and the beginnings of Henry Maier's political career. There are also fragmentary records related to Vonier's career with WTMJ-TV. The collection includes a journal written by Vonier and Gauer concerning personal, local, and world events as reflected by a fictional character they named "Noble Seamen"; a World War II reminiscence by Robert Vail; correspondence; drawings; photographs; and the organizational records of United States of Young Americans.

Title: Papers, 1935-1959.

Papers of Harold Gauer of Milwaukee, Wis., relating to his career as a campaign manager and speech writer during the 1940s for several local politicians, along with his partner Robert Bloch. The collection includes political analyses, speeches, financial plans, fundraising materials, radio talks, campaign strategies and suggestions, brochures, booklets, correspondence, and memoranda relating to the campaigns of Milwaukee politicians Carl Zeidler, Fred Clausen, Herbert J. Steffes, Thomas Amlie, John Bohn, Carter Wells, and Henry Reuss. There is also material which Gauer and Bloch developed for the Wendell Willkie campaign in Wisconsin, and information on the early Union for Democratic Action. Two folders relate to Gauer's involvement with the Milwaukee Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and the Milwaukee Pops Orchestra and include correspondence, press releases, programs, and memoranda. The collection also includes photographs made by Gauer, dating mainly 1935-1950, of Milwaukee politicians and the Polish-Italian community in the Brady Street area of Milwaukee, and letters exchanged with friends Robert Bloch, Robert Vail, Sprague Vonier, and others on World War II events and experiences.
