The Lillian Hellman papers comprise manuscripts, correspondence, legal documents, business records, appointment books, and clippings. Series I includes notes for and multiple drafts of all Hellman's plays and memoirs. Drafts of film scripts, original and adaptations, by Hellman and others, are included in the series, along with articles, interviews, speeches, teaching files, and editorial work. Series II contains Hellman's professional and general correspondence, principally from 1934 to her death. Personal correspondence is largely absent. Correspondents include Leonard Bernstein, Kermit Bloomgarden, Don Congdon, Dashiell Hammett, Max B. Hellman, John Hersey, Stanley M. Isaacs, Diane Johnson, Robert Lantz, Katherine Lederer, Harry Levin, Little, Brown and Company, Archibald MacLeish, Bernard Malamud, John F. Melby, New York Times, R. D. Orlova, Dorothy Parker, Richard Poirier, Herman Shumlin, Margaret Tallichet, Hanna Weinstein, and Richard Wilbur. Series III Other Papers is the largest series and contains Hellman's appointment books from 1956 on, along with an extensive collection of scrapbooks and clippings. Notebooks describing foreign travel between 1944 and 1980 and a group of address books are also present in the series. Series IV, Legal and Financial Papers, includes documents and correspondence concerning Hellman's acquisition and administration of Dashiell Hammett's literary estate, along with materials relating to Hellman's investments, personal taxes, and household expenses. Series V, Works by and Papers of Others, includes short pieces about Lillian Hellman, a small group of materials relating to Dorothy Parker, and a collection of documents on Hellman assembled by various federal government agencies between 1940 and 1975.

Goetz, Ruth Goodman. Papers, 1916-1983.

Title: Papers, 1916-1983.

Papers of Ruth Goodman Goetz (1912-2001), a playwright and screenwriter, together with papers of two members of her theatrical family: her father, Philip Goodman (1885-1940), who was a producer of Broadway plays and musicals, and her husband and collaborator, Augustus Goetz (1889-1957). Also present are papers of agent Leah Salisbury pertaining to her management of Goetz's literary interests. Philip Goodman's papers include correspondence, contracts, agreements, financial records, and typescript copies of plays produced or written by Goodman. The work of Ruth Goodman and Augustus Goetz includes scripts, correspondence, and financial records for stage and screen plays such as "Carrie" (Para., 1952), "The Immoralist" (1954), "The Hidden River" (1957), and "One Man Show" (1945). "The Heiress," for which the Goetzes adapted both the stage (1947) and screen (Para., 1949) versions is partially documented, although scripts for neither are present. Prominent correspondents represented in the papers include Brooks Atkinson, Frith Banbury, James M. Cain, Constance Cummings, W. C. Fields, Andre Gide, Alan F. Guttmacher, Oscar Hammerstein II, George S. Kaufman, Jerome Kern, Eli Landau, Irving Paul Lazar, Sinclair Lewis, Don Marquis, Raymond Pearl, J. B. Priestley, Elmer Rice, Billy Rose, Robert E. Sherwood, and William Wyler. A large part of the correspondence is letters exchanged between Mrs. Goetz and her daughter over a thirty year period. Also part of the collection is a typescript journal of a trip made to China in 1978; references to associations with Clifford Odets, S. J. Perelman, and David Selznick; undated costume plates; and production designs and stills from "The Heiress."

Swett, Samuel, 1774-1853. Papers, 1743-1847.

Title: Papers, 1743-1847.

The bulk of this collection is comprised of records of Samuel Swett's role in the development of Boston shipping. The collection contains correspondence of business partners, as well as his son Samuel concerning the financial troubles of his farm in Rose Valley, N.Y. There is extensive correspondence (with documents) of William Wyler ( - ), master of the brig Henry and Francis, which was owned by Swett. In addition to correspondence, there are clearance papers, prices current in Marseille, France, accounts of sales, bills of lading, and many letters concerning Wyler's detention in Marseille and subsequent seizure by a British warship, 1809-1811. Wyler's letters reflect his attitude toward the Embargo Act, the British Orders in Council and France's Berlin and Milan Decrees. Much of the business correspondence and documents deal with building contracts for stores along Boston's wharves, contracts with Loring Jacob (1771-1846) for the building of Swett's houses in Boston and Dedham, 1806-1808, Swett's services as administrator of various estates, e.g., that of Dr. Claude Francis Sauvaget ( -1813), and his role as warden of the Episcopal Church of Dedham, 1806-1815, including papers concerning the lease of church land, bills, receipts, and a list of church property with names of tenants. The collection contains many land deeds, 1743-1847, especially those of Ebenezer Farley ( - ) and Asa Hammond ( - ), and insurance policies on ships owned by Swett and Horatio Sprague (1784- ) and held by the New England Marine Insurance Company, many of which contained exemptions from risk of seizure, 1809-1812. Of special interest are the papers relating to shares in Ohio land originally purchased by Dr. John Sprague (1718-1797) from the Ohio Company of Association in 1788. The papers include correspondence with Swett's agents in Marietta, Ohio, relative to yearly taxes on the land which he had purchased from Sprague, descriptions of his shares, a booklet listing the original shareholders who drew lots in Ohio land at Rice's Tavern (Providence, R.I.) in 1788, and a copy of an order by Gen. Rufus Putnam (1738-1824) calling for recruits to settle the territory in 1790. The collection contains shipping documents, 1796-1822, including cargo reports, invoices of goods, daily muster rolls, ship's deeds, passports, receipts of sales, and the correspondence of ships' captains describing seizures and detentions by the British. A few of Swett's ships mentioned in these papers are the Tyger, Edward Foster, and Fortuna on voyages to Gibraltar and Rio de Janiero. The account books, day books, and ledgers concern primarily Swett's shipping business and personal cash accounts, 1794-1821, in addition to farm accounts in Dedham, and entries in connection with his administration of the estate of John and Esther Harrison Sprague (1728-1811), 1811-1812.
