Manson who mentions Sherman's march, Reconstruction and a black revolt in Bethany, Ga., and the consequent terrorizing of blacks by the Ku-Klux Klan. Other topics include the Civil War in Virginia, particularly the siege of Petersburg, and chicken farming. Of interest are two letters, 1868 and 1869, to Thomas Garland of Albemarle County from Governor Henry Horatio Wells and Ale[exander?] Rives re appointments and patronage. In addition to the correspondence there are business and miscellaneous papers, other papers re an estate settlement, and some papers of the Terrell family, 1823-1867.

Title: Papers of George Carr (1745) 1801-1939.

Family and professional correspondence of Carr constitutes the bulk of the collection. In the former are numerous letters describing the pioneer life of relatives who emigrated to Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, & Mississippi. Of unusual interest is a letter describing an 1842 Philadelphia race riot. Later 19th century family letters are primarily concerned with the genealogy of the Carr and related Cave, Poore, Cross, Tompkins and Trevillian families. Carr's professional papers contain correspondence and some related legal and financial papers for Albemarle County clients. Of interest are his papers as attorney for Uriah Phillips Levy, the purchaser of Monticello, and Carr's subsequent management of the estate after Levy's death until its purchase by Thomas Jefferson Levy. Other professional items include George Wythe Randolph's interest in a fireproof clerk's office in Richmond, the 1825 proceeds of the Board of School Commissioners, problems over settlement of the will of Martin Dawson, and a contemporary copy of a legal brief in Jefferson vs. Michie over land at Milton, 1804-1813. Political commentary appears frequently and includes a letter, 1814, from Joseph Jones Monroe to James Monroe regarding opposition to the current administration supposedly fomented by Jefferson, and the draft of an 1834 speech by William Cabell Rives explaining his support of Andrew Jackson's destruction of the 2nd Bank of the U.S. and consequent resignation as senator. Carr's financial papers contain bills and receipts, insurance policies for houses and slaves and comodity price reports. The collection also contains 4 letters, 1801-1802, from James Dinsmore to Thomas Jefferson regarding work on the Monticello dining room; 18th cent. land grants in Goochland and Greenbrier; wills and deeds including copies on an 1837 deed from Thomas Jefferson Randolph to David Michie, and and 1832 Deed of James Monroe and Elizabeth Kortright Monroe offering their Albemarle Co. land as surety for a debt; the records of an investigation of a military court of occupation into a land fraud case involving Carr; scattered militia rolls and expenses, 1794-1829; land surveys; an 1832 commonplace book; and The Piedmont Hospital of Charlottesville, Va. 1886-1902, Haidee Watson Perkins Michie. Collection includes a Eugene Perry photograph of an unidentified African American woman "Mammy Sally" connected with the Poore family of Albemarle County, Va. Correspondents include Alexander Rives, Thomas Walker Gilmer, John Andrew Gardner Davis, St. George Tucker, Thomas Johnson Michie, 1795-1873, Charles Christian Wertenbaker, Thomas Mann Randolph, Jefferson Randolph Taylor and Joseph Coolidge.

Reminiscences of my Life and Work among the Freedmen of Charlottesville, Virginia, from March 1st 1866 to July 1st 1875. Vol. 2. contains chapters on "Visitors," "Slave stories," "Friendly white citizens," "Characters among the freedmen" "Letters from pupils," and "Leftovers", plus Carkin's reflections on her work and the progress of her pupils and the freedmen in general. The section on visitors very briefly notes the names of visitors to the school including the Marquis of Lorne, the wife of William Barton Rogers, and General Samuel C. Armstrong who assisted a pupil in attending Hampton Institute. The chapter on slave stories contains brief life histories or anecdotes about local freedmen. The chapter on friendly white citizens describes cordial relations with tradespeople and lists the few whites who evinced a friendly interest in their work including Professors Minor and McGuffey, Alexander Rives, and bank cashier [Alexander P.?] Abell, and discusses the resignation of Anna Gardner over religious views. "Special characters among freedmen" relates stories about "Aunt" Jenny Pickett, Thomas Farrar, Robert Sellers, the Rev. William Gibbons (a former slave of University of Virginia professor Henry Howard), Isabella Gibbons, Jesse Kelly, Margaret Lewis, and the musical Scott family. "Letters from pupils" contains letters from Tilly M. Sellers, 1886, who sends news of former pupils and the work at his own school at Boyd's Station, whose library was named for Franklin B. Sanborn who sent books for the school. Letters from Rives Minor, 1910, mentions the success of many former pupils including the Scotts, Benjamin Tonsler, John West, and [?] Inge, and describes teaching in Highland County, Va., in 1879. In "Leftovers," Carkin describes predjudice encountered by Isabella Gibbons and herself on a train trip to see Grant's inaugural. She also gives more information about Benjamin Tonsler, the student that Armstrong provided for at Hampton, as well as Robert Scott and Egbert Terry. Typed transcription available.

The collection contains a bound manuscript journal Reminiscences of my Life and Work among the Freedmen of Charlottesville, Virginia, from March 1st 1866 to July 1st 1875. Vol. 1, together with a carte-de-visite portrait, n.d., of Carkin by Charlottesville photographer William Roads, and a copy of her certificate of commission as a teacher of ex-slaves issued by the Eastern Department of the American Freedmen's Aid Commission. In her reminiscences Carkin describes her arrival; the town of Charlottesville; military occupation; the University of Virginia and its students; Monticello; fellow teachers, particularly Anna Gardner, Isabella Gibbons and Paul Lewis; schoolhouses, schoolrooms, teaching duties, and students; entertainment; and travel, including a trip to Grant's inauguration and one to the Virginia constitutional convention of 1867-1868. She discusses the lives of the freedmen and their desire for an education; religious revivals; harassment of the school staff and the freedmen by townspeople and university students; celebrations and social events; trips to town by local mountaineers; and a Rivanna River flood in 1870. Aspects of local life different from New England are noted particularly in the purchase of food and fuel, lack of sanitation, and casual cruelty to animals. Thomas Jefferson Randolph and Alexander Rives are mentioned briefly.
