This collection primarily documents the career of Bankhead (1842-1920) as a U.S. Senator, though his elections to various offices and his personal financial life are both documented quite extensively also, particularly his connections and involvement in Ala. economic developments such as coal mining, real estate, water power and railroads. Within the U.S. Senatorial records the correspondence and letters, general, and the subject files cover a vast array of political topics, with a special emphasis on the U.S. Post Office; river navigation and hydroelectric power; U.S. and Ala. politics; prohibition; agriculture; labor; Good Roads program; tariffs; foreign affairs; and hundreds of other subjects. The photographs are quite extensive, and there are quite a few of him and his children that are in excellent condition and of good quality.
