This collection contains twelve photoprints in the cabinet print format, although only nine are true albumen cabinet prints. The subjects depicted are European scientists. Except as otherwise noted in the listing, biographical information about the subjects was located in standard biographical references, such as Asimov's Biographical Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, Dictionary of Scientific Biography, Chambers' Dictionary of Scientists, and World Who's in Science.

Alophe. Portraits of members of the upper classes in Baden-Baden, St. Petersburg and Paris.

Title: Portraits of members of the upper classes in Baden-Baden, St. Petersburg and Paris. 1859-1871.

A collection of 28 group portraits and over 300 carte-de-visite portraits assembled by Roger Batbedat, a French attaché stationed in Baden-Baden and St. Petersburg. The first portion of the album contains photographic records of family groups in an elite German resort setting at Lichtental, Germany, on the Oos river near Baden-Baden, between September 1860 and 1863. Portrait cartes-de-visite (1859-1871) depict principally people active in European diplomatic, political and aristocratic circles photographed within prefabricated studio settings in a wide range of poses, facial expressions and dress. Most poses are full-length and sharp-focus. Props include drapery, furniture (tables and pedestals), velvet cloaks, and diverse attendant objects of visual appeal. Various celebrity portraits are interspersed throughout.

Petit, Pierre, 1832-. Exposition universelle, 1867 Paris.

Title: Exposition universelle, 1867 Paris. 1867.

The seven photographs depict displays in the 1867 Exposition universelle in Paris, held on the Champs de Mars. Six are by Pierre Petit, official photographer of the Commission impériale. The seventh was taken by Bisson jeune (published by Léon & Lévy). Four interior views of the Palais show contributions from the United States: the Minnesota display includes globes, decorative objects, and an installation of photographs of Yosemite by Carleton Eugene Watkins; the Indiana section includes photographic portraits by Frederick Gutekunst; the Mississippi portion contains lamps, clocks, and crystal; and one image depicts American machinery and includes a view of the stained glass windows of the Galerie des machines. A fifth interior view of the Palais shows a Russian gallery featuring a replica of Rumanian cupolas, with a Japanese pagoda in the background. The remaining two prints depict a small-scale replica of the Mosquée de la Brousse (Green Mosque of Bursa, Turkey): an interior view by Petit and an exterior view by Bisson jeune.
