The collection contains letters, 1838-1893, of John B. Minor, regarding family and financial matters, the study of law, and the University of Virginia; and letters, 1922-1947, from L.M. Berkeley, principally to Lucy M. Barrett, regarding family, financial, and legal matters, Briery Knowe, the family estate, and Barrett's declining health. There are also papers, 1840-1899, of Lancelot and Mary Ann (Swann) Minor, including financial and legal papers, and correspondence, regarding day-to-day life at Briery Knowe, the Presbyterian Church, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. The collection also includes essays and sermons, 1840-1880, of Lancelot Minor, regarding temperance, education, agriculture, and the Presbyterian Church and its elders; an agricultural diary, 1838-1887, with accounts, and a diary, 1860-1861, with entries regarding the adoption of a sharecropping system at Briery Knowe. The collection also includes a time book, 1879-1884, with entries for work and wages; diary, 1860-1899, of Mary Ann Minor, with accounts of family matters, Amherst County, Va., social life, and religious sentiments; photographs, 1882-1896, of Minor and Swann family members; and a daguerreotype, n.d., of a female slave (a.k.a the Minor family nurse). There are also newspaper clippings, 1886-1944, regarding the Barrett, Berkeley, Minor, Mowbray, and Swann families.
