Contains manuscripts and drawings, probably gathered by Asa Gray in producing the expedition's first report. Includes lists of plants collected on the expedition (created by several individuals); letters by Francis Boott and Brackenridge containing notes on Carices and Unciniae and catalog of phanogamous plants; notes by Gray on plants of Hawaii and his manuscript for the unpublished portion of the botanical report. Also colored drawings, possibly field sketches, mostly by Alfred T. Agate and some by Joseph Drayton; and black and white drawings by Agate, W.R. Hutton, Drayton and Isaac Sprague.

The Boott papers consist of a copy by Boott of descriptions of Vaccinium in a manuscript in the British Museum, with marginal annotations by Boott. The manuscript consists of two sheets (eight pagaes), dated Sept. 25, 1843 and is directed to Asa Gray. Boott carried on a substantial correspondence with Asa Gray and the manuscript described here was probably part of the correspondence.

Contains mostly letters addressed to Parkman, from various colleagues, such as Francis Boott and James Webster, of both a professional and personal nature. Also includes resolutions upon the death of Parkman; testimonials to him; outlines of Parkman's anatomical lectures and copies of lectures on diseases of the bones, surgery, and many other topics; and patients' reports. Boott's letters pertain to a variety of matters such as prison discipline, the use of chloroform and ether, and personal affairs. Webster's letters discuss a controversy at Hobart College, Geneva, N.Y. Other letters concern medical malpractice, teaching and related matters at Castleton Medical College, editing a new journal, and similar subjects.

Most of the letters are addressed to staff members of the Gray Herbarium and were transferred to the archives from office files. Some letters were gifts to the Gray Herbarium that were interfiled into the collection.

Papers of the interrelated Putnam, Jackson, and Lowell families, including letters to Judge Samuel Putnam and letters between him and his son Samuel R. Putnam while the latter was working as a merchant in India and Europe. A large portion of the collection is devoted to the family of Dr. James Jackson, including materials related to his medical profession, in particular his work with cholera; correspondence with his son James Jr. while the latter was studying medicine in Europe, with his daughter Elizabeth C. Jackson (later Putnam), and among other Jackson siblings. (Cont'd) Papers of Elizabeth C. Putnam (b.1836) contain a lengthy correspondence with her mother, Elizabeth C.J. Putnam, and with Anna Cabot Lowell (1808-94), who also corresponded with Putnam's mother and grandfather. Putnam's papers also contain letters, speeches, and notes of cases pertaining to her work with various Mass. state primary and reform schools and other state charity boards. Her social welfare work specifically concerned the placement and visiting of indigent children as wards of the State. (Cont'd) One box of Putnam family genealogical materials is also included. Among the correspondents are Walter E. Fernald, Charles C. Emerson, Dr. James Jackson Putnam, Francis Boott, and Roger Wolcott.
