These manuscripts span the years 1807 to 1946 and are comprised of correspondence of the artist, his wife and descendants, and others; a subscription book for the double elephant folio and octavo editions of Birds of America, 1826-ca. 1845; and other miscellaneous papers. The correspondence is divided between John James Audubon and his wife, Lucy Bakewell Audubon. Topics covered in the artist's correspondence, 1807-1841, includes the collection of specimens, the engraving and publication of his work, descriptions of birds, and financial matters. The bulk of Lucy Bakewell Audubon's letters are dated 1862-1863 and deal with the sale of the original watercolors of the Birds of America to the New-York Historical Society; a few personal letters to her granddaughter are included. The remaining letters are family correspondence and assorted letters about Audubon and his work.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees and copies of a few other documents concerning the beginnings of the Home for Disabled Soldiers in New York City (1863-1866). Trustees included Theodore Roosevelt, James Lenox, Benjamin H. Field, Frederic De Peyster, Andrew Warner, Frank Moore, Gen. Daniel Butterfield, and others. The final minutes in this volume report that a committee was being formed to look further into the feasability of the home after trustees heard discouraging news about similar projects. Inserted are several loose sheets with address and attendance information for the trustees.

Record of ships arriving at New York, 1812-1815.
Journal, May 4, 1812 - July 11, 1815, kept at the Tontine Coffee-House, listing the arrival of ships at New York, including the vessel's name, master, port of departure, number of days out, and destination when not New York. Sometimes the cargo and consignee are given. The journal also includes notes on the weather and the time of high water, as well as other relevant information, such as intelligence of sighting, captures, and losses of ships, and general news related to the progress of the war and the blockade of New York. There is a printed summons laid in, dated April 11, 1879, naming Frederic de Peyster and William T. Horn as plaintiffs, relating to their claim to the Tontine Coffee-House as sole survivors of the tontine.

The latest volumes document the winding up of the association in 1870, by Frederic de Peyster and William T. Horn.

The Tontine Coffee-House Records consist of documentation of a business association that operated through the use of a tontine for over 80 years. The loose papers include correspondence, receipts, papers concerning the estates of Dr. John Charlton and his wife, accounting statements, records of unpaid dividends, sketches, the Tontine Constitution, lists of nominees and shareholders, wills, records of exchanges of shares, lease agreements, papers concerning heir claims to shares, property records, and declarations of trust. Bound volumes include records of minutes, accounts, share transfers, expenditures, dividend receipts, ship arrivals, and the original plan of the tontine arrangement.

Papers collected by Charles Carter Lee include papers of General Light-Horse-Harry Lee, Major Henry Lee, Charles Carter Lee, and John Penn Lee. Light-Horse-Harry Lee's papers consist mainly of correspondence pertinent to his "Memoirs of the War in the Southern Department of the United States." Other topics include anti-Federalism, travel to the West Indies and advice to a son. Light-Horse-Harry Lee's correspondents include William Goddard, Christopher R. Greene, Nathanael Greene (copies), Andrew Jackson (copy), Lafayette (copy), Ann Hill Carter Lee, James Madison (copies), Nathaniel Pendleton, and George Washington (copy). Major Henry Lee's papers consist primarily of correspondence written during his residence in Europe in the 1830s. Topics of interest include James Wilkinson's defeat before Montreal, Jacksonian era politics, David Porter in the Mediterranean, Lee's biography of Napoleon and proposed biography of Andrew Jackson, Lee's financial and legal troubles, Lee's literary efforts.
