Personal and business papers, 1820-1869, consisting of letters received, letter books of outgoing correspondence, account books, diaries, dockets, estate papers, memoranda, reports, bills, receipts, broadsides, and photographs. Correspondence includes approximately 10,000 letters to and from Delaware and Hudson Canal officials, locktenders, boatmen, raftsmen, property owners, and tax collectors. Other correspondents include John A. Roebling, John B. Jervis, James Archbald, Horatio Allen, the Wurts family, John Bolton, William Dimmick, and Benjamin Seward. Subjects include payments, results of canal inspections, legal matters, canal construction, land transactions, competition from railroads, and political aspects of canal management. Collection also includes papers of his son Russel F. Lord, Jr., an engineer in California, 1857-1885, consisting of pocket diaries, account books, mining notes, and a pamphlet of his report on the lands of the Brentwood Coal Company in Contra Costa County, Calif., 1873.

Townsend family papers, 1799-1902, 1812-1871

Isaiah Townsend (1777-1838) and John Townsend (1783-1854) were merchants in Albany, N.Y. The brothers and their heirs, Franklin, Theodore and Rufus, were active in business and political developments of the day. Their business interests began and were concentrated in the iron trade but also included salt production, railroads, steamboats, real estate in New York and other states, banking, and insurance. Collection consists of correspondence, business, legal and land papers, and other materials that document the business activities of the Townsend family. Correspondence, 1799-1897, mainly concerns business interests but also contains references to political issues and family and personal matters. Business correspondence relates to orders for manufacture of parts, accounts, and purchase and sale of iron primarily in New York. Accounts, 1801-1896, are included for the various companies set up by the Townsend family and other companies in which they had shares and/or interests. These records consist of items such as bills, receipts, orders, notes and drafts, invoices, money and labor lists, weigher's returns, statements, and cancelled checks. Legal papers, 1805-1845, contain papers relating to debts, estate matters, land disputes, and receipts for family expenditures. Also, land papers, 1799-1854; insurance papers, 1821-1880; and miscellaneous papers, 1802-1902, which include a variety of business-related documents; a diary, 1840-1841, of Isaiah Townsend; lectures, 1860-1865, given by Howard Townsend; and mechanical drawings.

Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963

Title: Peale-Sellers Family Collection, 1686-1963

The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.
