Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

The collection ranges from personal correspondence to literary, legal, military, & U.S. commissioner of pensions communications and also includes clippings, letterpress & address books and personal diaries. Correspondence (1867-1911), diaries (1884-1908), military papers (1859-1888), memo & address books (1894-1909), court cases, certificates, and invitations relate to Eugene F. Ware's military career in Colorado, Dakota Territory, Iowa, Kansas, & Nebraska with the 1st Iowa Infantry Regiment and 4th & 7th Iowa Cavalry Regiments; his law practice in Fort Scott & other Kansas cities; his term as Kansas State senator (1879-83); and as pension commissioner (1902-5). Includes material on the Spanish American War and Topeka, Kan., floods (1903). Other topics include Fort Scott, autobiographical notes, poems & commentaries about poems, Kansas' quarter- and half-century of statehood celebrations, his nom de plume Ironquill, and controversy over his poem Dewey. Also included are clippings and other miscellaneous documents. The majority of personal correspondence is from 1904. During his last year as U.S. commissioner of pensions, Ware frequently wrote his wife, Jeannette, and his son, Gene, & daughter, Abby. Other correspondence includes letters written and received by his mother, Amanda, and his father, Hiram. Other correspondents include F.G. Adams, Arthur Capper, William Elsey Connelley, Charles S. The Edmund G. Ross manuscript collection contains correspondence, biographical sketches, resolutions, and misc. papers. His Civil War letters, mostly to his wife, describe marches; locations; battles including Cane Hill & Prairie Grove; fighting at Cabin Creek, Indian Territory (present Oklahoma); and descriptions of Lawrence & Fort Scott, Kan. Correspondence while a U.S. senator relates to politics, appointments & officials, comments on President Andrew Johnson's impeachment & its aftermath, legislation, Ross's re-election, his legacy, and his book on the impeachment. Letters related to his appointment as territorial governor of New Mexico include material on his appointment & confirmation; trips to Washington, D.C.; and New Mexico political matters. Later letters concern farming, irrigation, and his tenure as secretary of the New Mexico Bureau of Immigration. Many of the letters and messages received support Ross's actions in the Senate and his appointment as governor. There are also clippings, pamphlets, and genealogical materials. Included as well are correspondence and papers relating to Hugh Cameron's pilgrimage to New Mexico in 1907 to see Ross. Other topics include Co. E, 11th Kansas Cavalry; James H. Stevens maintained scrapbooks concerning social, political, and economic issues, and the management of his farm while spending the summers at his farm in Morris County, Kansas. Scrapbook no. 42 contains almost exclusively newspaper clippings, dating from 1885 to 1929 (not in chronological order). Much of what appears in this scrapbook are articles written by himself and John J. Ingalls, or concerns such subjects as Francisco Vasquez de Coronado; Senator Preston Plumb; Kansas history; agriculture; prohibition; John Brown; Kansas Governor W. Roscoe Stubbs; the prisons at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; the Pony Express; eugenics; the Santa Fe Trail; the Dalton Gang; Mennonites in Kansas; and a wide variety of other Kansas miscellany. Scrapbook No. 260 pertains to the management and leasing of farmland in Morris County, Kansas owned by Walter B. Stevens.

This collection is composed primarily of correspondence and business forms relating to John Gilmore's activities as a newspaper publisher, journalist, state legislator, and a confident of state governors.

This collection contains general correspondence between Plumb and an individual named Cavaness. One letter was written to Philip Morgan, the American minister to Mexico City. In this letter Plumb requests an escort for two female travelers.
