The collection consists of typewritten copies of McGehee family papers including reminiscences, biographical sketches, genealogical notes, and miscellaneous writings. The typescripts were made by James Stewart McGehee. Volume 1, parts 1 and 2 contain biographical information about Edward McGehee and other family members including James Stewart McGehee's father, John Burruss McGehee (1836-1913). Included is an introduction by James Stewart McGehee, his correspondence, and miscellaneous documents. Volume 2, parts 1 and 2 contain a diary by Micajah McGehee (1848-1849) which provides an account of Fremont's expedition to California; biographical information and obituaries regarding family members; and letters relating to family genealogy. Volume 3 consists of an autobiography of James Stewart McGehee and an account of the Veal family, a family of slaves associated with the McGehees.

Manuscript narrative in journal form in which McGehee relates his earlier experiences with John C. Frémont's fourth expedition to the West (1848-1849), describing the course of the expedition from St. Louis to Tucson, especially the severe weather and starvation encountered when trying to cross the Rocky Mountains, the terrain covered, and wildlife seen, and giving detailed information on settlements in New Mexico and Arizona and various Indian tribes.

Business papers include correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial records, board minutes and legal documents from the New Mexico Insurance Agents Association, 1922-26, Rotary International, 1929-46, and Consumers Tobacco Company, 1925-34.
