James Stewart McGehee was a planter and businessman of Wilkinson County, Mississippi and St. Louis, Missouri. His grandfather, Edward McGehee (sometimes called Edmund, 1786-1880), was the owner of Bowling Green Plantation in Mississippi. His plantation home was burned during the Civil War. Edward McGehee moved to Mississippi from Georgia in the early 19th century, was active in business in Louisiana and Mississippi, and became the president of the West Feliciana Railroad. He operated a cotton factory in Woodville, Mississippi, where he founded the Woodville Bank and the Woodville Female Academy.

James Stewart McGehee, planter and businessman, was the son of John Burruss McGehee (1836-1913) and Catherine Eliza Stewart of Wilkinson County, Mississippi. His grandfather, Edward McGehee (sometimes called Edmund, 1786-1880), was the owner of Bowling Green Plantation of Mississippi. The plantation home was burned by a Federal officer, J. B. Cook, and Negro troops during the Civil War.
