The collection consists of records created while Karl Taylor Compton (president 1930-1948) and James Rhyne Killian (president 1948-1959) served in the position of president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It contains correspondence, reports, memoranda, and committee materials about the activities of the presidents and their staff, the definition and evolution of policies, and the administration of the Institute. Records document Compton's early efforts to strengthen the administrative structure of the Institute, to encourage research, and to develop the science curriculum. Defense research and other contributions in the years of World War II, as well as MIT's role and influence in policy and research developments in the postwar years is also well documented.

Guastavino Co.'s projects in Massachusetts. The amount of material for projects vary from one item to two full folders. Correspondence is between R. Guastavino Co. and the principals involved in the projects, i.e., contractors, architects, suppliers, etc. Notes and clippings were later added by Prof. George Collins as a result of his research.

Subject file including: notebooks, fieldbooks, and other material, especially pertaining to painting techniques amd the analysis of pigments used by ancient painters. Book, article and lecture file with research material (including many photos) for two unpublished books: Etruscan Painting of the Fifth Century B.C. at Tarquinia, and The Palette of the Ancient Painter. Also published articles and chapters from books. Oversized material consisting of photos, plates and original drawings by Prentice Duell pertaining to the technique of the ancient painter.
