The papers of Maltby Sykes measure 4.7 linear feet and date from 1931 to 1993. The papers document his career as a painter, lithographer, draftsman, and engraver through correspondence; notes, manuscripts, and other writings; exhibition files, teaching materials, an apprenticeship with Diego Rivera, and other professional activity; price lists, inventories, receipts, and other business records; clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, press releases, newsletters, and other printed material; sketches, sketchbooks, engraving plates, and other artwork; and photographs and slides of Sykes, some of his exhibitions, and his artwork.Biographical material conists of resumes and biographical statements, membership cards, and Syke's obituary.Correspondence consists of letters with sitters, colleagues, galleries, associations and organizations, universities, and others, among them Albert Christ-Janer, Fritz Eichenberg, George C. Miller, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Writings consists of manuscripts such as "Multimetal Lithography for Artists", 1967, written as a result of a grant from the NEA, and containing original prints; lectures delivered at various universities and exhibitions describing his printmaking and portraiture work; and miscellaneous notes.Professional material consists of some general exhibition related materials such as labels and acceptance cards for works artwork accepted for exhibitions, an honorable mention ribbon for a mixed media piece, and entries for various juried exhibitions at Print Clubs around the country. Also included is one file of teaching material related to his printmaking courses. The majority of the material relates to Syke's time as an apprentice to Diego Rivera as he worked on the Hotel Reforma murals in 1936. This material includes correspondence, some writings and recollections by Sykes on Rivera, clippings on Rivera, some sketches of the murals by Sykes, and photographs of Rivera at work on the murals.Personal business records consist of price lists, inventories, and receipts, sales documents, and artwork deeds of gifts to the Smithsonian Institution.Printed material consists of clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, newsletters, press releases, and an unbound scrapbook of miscellaneous printed material.Artwork consists of sketches and sketchbooks, artist proofs for engraving plates, an engraving plate of Glastonbury Abbey, and some sketches by other artists.Photographic material consists of photographs and slides of Sykes, some of his exhibitions, and his artwork. Also included are portraits of subjects he later painted.

Carl Milles papers

Title: Carl Milles papers

Twenty letters (1949-1955) include four from Albert Christ-Janer concerning financial matters and one from Milles' assistant Berthold Schiwetz. Photographs (1944-1954) show Milles at work (2 copyprints microfilmed on reel 1817, fr. 836-839), works of art by Milles and his wife Olga, and the Klockargardens Skola (1947). Other materials consist of clippings (1942-1970), five contracts (1948-1952), receipts (1955), and a program from a memorial service for Milles (1955).

Karl E. Fortess interviews with artists

Title: Karl E. Fortess interviews with artists

The taped interviews with artists by Karl Fortress measure 5.6 linear feet and date from circa 1963 to 1985. The interviews consist of 205 cassettes containing 268 interviews, averaging 35 minutes, of painters, sculptors, and printmakers. Fortess conducted seventy-nine of the interviews as a pilot for and as part of a grant from Office of Education, U.S. Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare at Boston University's School of Applied Arts. Included in the collection is the final report for the grant, June 1968, summarizing the objective was "to develop a library of taped interviews with contemporary American painters, sculptors, and graphic artists, such interviews to be concerned with questions of technical, professional and personal interest" and the evaluation process and outcomes of the value of the interviews as a teaching resource for faculty and students. The interviews followed guidelines to include background, training, work patterns, interests, teachers, influences, teaching experiences, attitudes toward teaching, and opinions on art trends. Fortess continued interviewing artists upon completion of the grant, including many with with artists associated with the Woodstock, N.Y. art community.
