Papers consist of correspondence, writings, notes, photographs, and other items. Included are the papers of St. Julien R. Childs, Margaretta Pringle Childs, William Wallace Childs, Lise Ravenel Childs, and the Pringle family (1896-1940). Correspondence includes letters (1901-1908) of Ernest Henry Pringle (1881-1955) written to his fiancee (later his wife) Nellie McColl while he was working as a traveling salesman for a Charleston (S.C.) drygoods store. Letters from Baltimore (Md.), Columbia (S.C.), Bennettsville (S.C.), and elsewhere in South Carolina and North Carolina concern personal and family matters, courtship, Ernest H. Pringle's job, and other matters. Papers of Frederick Lynn Childs include a letter (1842) from him to his father Major Thomas Childs regarding family matters; and letters (1867-1912) to Frederick Lynn Childs from Jennie Anderson, Annie Childs Rees, his son William W. Childs at the Carolina Military Institute (Charlotte, N.C.) and elsewhere, and letters from other family members at Stateburg (S.C.) and other locations concerning family matters, Frederick L. Childs' job, William W. Childs' education, and other matters. There is also correspondence and papers (1890-1912) of Mr.and Mrs. W.L. Saunders, including a letter from Mary M. Childs; and papers (1890s, mostly letters) of W.W. Anderson. In addition, there are Childs family financial records including accounts, bills, and receipts, as well as certificates and diplomas. Photographs (1870s-1970) are those of the family of St. Julien Ravenel and friends, and members of the Childs family and the allied families of Rutledge, Pinckney, Pringle, and Hayne. Also included are photographs (1917-1925) of St. Julien Ravenel Childs and family in St. Thomas (V.I.) and the Dominican Republic and scenes of those countries, with some picture postcards; reproductions of photographs (ca. 1914-1915) of The Citadel (Charleston, S.C.); a silhouette of W.W. Childs; a photograph (ca. 1920) of Borough House (Stateburg, S.C.); negatives; some oversized photographs; and a drawing of William W. Childs by his sister Mary Childs.

Childs in Atlanta (Ga.) about personal matters and his job as a manager for a coal and ice company; his letters (1903-1926) from Washington (D.C.) regarding, among other things, his employment with the Bureau of Corporations in the U.S. Department of Commerce and Labor; and his letters (1906-1914) from the Panama Canal Zone, Saginaw (Mich.), and elsewhere. Also included are letters to Lise R. Childs from her son St. Julien R. Childs at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. (1914-1917), in the U.S. Marine Corps at St. Thomas, Virgin Islands (1918-1922), and in the Dominican Republic (1922-1923) concerning his schooling, military life, and family matters. Papers chiefly consist of correspondence and historical writings and research. Correspondence (1902-1940s) chiefly consists of letters to St. Julien R. Childs from family and friends regarding family matters, his education, politics, his efforts to enter West Point, military service at Parris Island (S.C.), St. Thomas (V.I.), and the Dominican Republic, estate matters, property and stock transactions, and other matters. Correspondents include Margaretta Pringle (later his wife), William W. Childs, Lise R. Childs, and many others. Included are letters and military papers, mostly official military correspondence (some in Spanish), concerning Childs' attempts to enter West Point, his commission as an officer in the Marine Corps, duty assignments and transfers, and other matters. Historical writings and research mainly consist of research notes on various topics. Also included are drafts and manuscripts of articles and other writings, with related notes, bibliographies, printed material, and correspondence. Included is a card index of the names of Huguenot emigres ("Richmond List" A-K). Topics of notes and writings include colonial physicians of South Carolina and other aspects of South Carolina history, medical care of slaves on an 18th century rice plantation, public health in 17th century England, lead poisoning in colonial South Carolina, malaria and Indians in colonial times, slavery, Huguenots, pirates, and other subjects. There are also extracts of South Carolina state statutes, legislative journals, public records, and records of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel.
