On violation of the Sabbath as a marketing day by Blacks and others; 2 churches on one end of the island, one for Blacks; a description of Hopkins' residence and the beauties of the island, and the Black women carrying wares on their heads; coconuts cost one stiver (1 1/3 cents); can see windmills on the estates of St. Thomas which are their sugarmills; many streets paved with conch shells. Mother (L.T.H.) discusses son George's health.

This collection contains two promissory notes to hire slaves, one from Edward Martin to Mrs. Mary K. Hopkins and the other from B.E. Meade to Dr. A. Hopkins. Two letters, written during the Civil War, from George Hopkins to Joe Hopkins and from Erasmus Hopkins to Joe Hopkins, contain news of a march to and from Fredericksburg on little food, Erasmus' detailing as assistant superintendent to build a dam, and inquiries into conditions at home. A third letter from Major N.R. Fitzhugh to Capt. George Hopkins encloses a receipt and a form to be filled in [not included] to pay for beef.

Papers of Joseph Rosseel include a business letter to George Parish, 1832, a letter to Louis Hasbrouck regarding his trip to Europe, 1834, and a letter to his granddaughter Louisa R. Hopkins attending the Female Academy in Albany, 1853. Papers of Elizabeth Rosseel consist of letters written to her father and other relatives while away at school, 1826-1828. Papers of James G. Hopkins include letters from his father Roswell Hopkins, 1819-1820; his letters to Joseph Rosseel requesting permission to marry Elizabeth and subsequent family news, political affairs in Albany, and business matters, 1831-1843; his letters to Elizabeth regarding shipment of furniture, news of their children, political events in Albany, travel experiences, and domestic advice, 1837-1851; political letters from Millard Fillmore, 1849, and Thurlow Weed, 1845; Hopkins' letter declining a nomination, 1855; and manuscript speeches on the St. Lawrence Bank controversy, 1845, and the extension of the Erie Canal, 1841. Papers of Roswell Hopkins include letters from his son George, 1815-1818, two letters from Nathan Ford regarding election and political issues, 1812, his letters to David Parish, 1809-1812, and his petition requesting his military pay, 1779. Other items include deeds, receipts, agreements, mortgages, affidavits, and bonds, 1806-1859; the will of Alexander Miller, Joseph Rosseel's father-in-law, 1814; and three letters from Frank Rosseel to Lauretta Gibbs about his family history, 1921.
