Title:
Duveen Brothers Records, 1876-1981, bulk 1909-1964.
The records provide an detailed view of the Duveen Brothers business activities in London, Paris, and New York. Although the archive extends from 1876-1981, the bulk of the material dates from Joseph Duveen's tenure as president of the firm, 1909-1939, and the period from 1939 to 1964 when Edward Fowles directed the firm (with Armand Lowengard until 1943). The mass of documents, such as cables and letters, invoices, and ledger and stock books, give a day-by-day account of art dealing, business strategy, and the individuals involved.

Du Pont de Nemours, Pierre Samuel, 1739-1817. Papers, 1757-1836.
Title:
Papers, 1757-1836.
The correspondence of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours covers his entire public career - particularly his involvement with the Physiocratic movement in pre-revolutionary France. The letters from Anne-Robert Turgot represent one of the most significant parts of the collection as they relate to Du Pont de Nemours' career as a governmental official prior to the French Revolution. The collection also describes his settlement in the United States and his later diplomatic career after the fall of Napoleon. Included in the letters is the earliest known one sent by Benjamin Franklin, the first American with whom Du Pont de Nemours had any associations. There is also correspondence with Mirabeau, Napoleon, Talleyrand, Vergennes, Voltaire, and Jacques Necker. The letters from Jacques Necker describe economic conditions during the last years of the ancien régime and the process by which Louis XVI formulated the royal budget. There is also an exchange of letters between Thomas Jefferson and Du Pont de Nemours.

Du Pont family. Papers, 1685-1895 1840-1870 (bulk dates).
Title:
Papers, 1685-1895 1840-1870 (bulk dates).
The collection contains scrapbooks, a diary, letters, and a few financial papers, related to several members of the du Pont family. The largest group of letters pertain to Ann Ridgely, wife of Charles Irènée du Pont. The letters include condolences to her on the deaths of her father and her husband, a Valentine poem, a record of some of the expenses of her daughter Amy's wedding, letters from her to Charles about setting the date for their wedding, some Ridgely genealogy, letters from a granddaughter at boarding school, and some Ridgely family correspondence. Also included in the collection are letters from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to Pierre Samuel du Pont. Franklin praised du Pont's writing, and Jefferson asked for his help in negotiations with France about Louisiana. Other correspondents include Alexander Hamilton (about the right of foreigners to own land in the U.S.) and James Monroe (glad the du Ponts have settled in the U.S.). The Marquis de Lafayette wrote letters of introduction for James Antoine Bidermann to Bushrod Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Jerome Bonaparte informed the du Ponts of his marriage to Elizabeth Patterson. Photocopies of documents in other collections relate to the building of the Bidermann's house at Winterthur, Delaware. Several scrapbooks and other volumes are found in the collection. Victorine du Pont Bauduy collected poems in her album. Eleuthera du Pont Smith collected drawings and poems from family and friends. The Marquis de Lafayette wrote in her album when he visited the United States in 1824-1825. Two scrapbooks contain pressed flowers. Eleuthera Smith's flower book includes flowers collected for her out west, and also flowers from du Pont weddings. A silhouette of an unidentified woman is laid into the back of Eleuthera's album. The other flower scrapbook may have belonged to Evalina du Pont Bidermann. A brief diary was kept by Henry du Pont in 1842, mainly recording agricultural work. The collection also contains a group of almost 200 receipted bills, most of which were sent to E.I. du Pont. They document purchases of textiles, china, glassware, shoes, jewelry, furniture, and other household goods. As well, there are bills from tailors and dressmakers and one doctor's bill. One bill lists lumber being shipped from Cuba. A few items in the collection have no discernable connection to the du Pont family.

Title:
Miscellaneous Benjamin Franklin Collections 1710-1822
Since publication of I. Minis Hays's Calendar of the Papers of Benjamin Franklin in 1908, the APS Library has acquired a large number of miscellaneous letters and other documents relating to the life, mind, and work of Franklin and his immediate family. The collections listed in this finding aid consist of letters and documents to and from Franklin organized into groupings based upon provenance or focal point. The largest grouping consists of miscellaneous materials acquired individually or in small groups over the years, including a number of important individual items. The other collections consist largely of correspondence between Franklin and individual friends and colleagues, including his friends Mme Brillon, Mary "Polly" Stevenson Hewson, and Catherine Ray Greene, the Whig agriculturist Richard Jackson, and the printer Francis Childs. The collections include photostats of selected materials held by other institutions or that were in private hands. These are available for reference only.

Title:
Duveen Brothers records 1876-1981 1909-1964
Notable art dealers from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The records provide a detailed view of the Duveen Brothers business activities in London, Paris, and New York. Although the archive extends from 1876 to 1981, the bulk of the material dates from Joseph Duveen's tenure as president of the firm, 1909-1939, and the period 1939-1964 when Edward Fowles directed the firm (with Armand Lowengard until 1943). The mass of documents, such as cables and letters, invoices, and ledger and stock books, give a day-by-day account of art dealing, business strategy, and the individuals involved. Included are some records from the Kleinberger Galleries, 1906-1971, and 6 linear feet of Edward Flowles's papers.

Title:
Duveen Brothers records, 1876-1981, bulk 1909-1964.
The records provide a detailed view of the Duveen Brothers business activities in London, Paris, and New York. Series I (circa 112 linear feet) contains the firm's business records. Stock books indicate where objects were sent for repair, to whom objects were sent on approbation along with the date of sale and the price realized. Invoices include receipts, sales invoices sent to clients, lists of cablegrams and shipment of stock from each branch of the business. Series II (circa 155 linear feet) consists of papers and correspondence which broadly cover the interaction between the Duveen Brothers firm and its clients, business associates, and the public. The correspondence describes art collecting trends among museums and individuals, the availability and purchase of art, art research and authentication, and the firm's general business practices. Eleven boxes of correspondence with Bernard Berenson detail his business relationship with the firm. Also included are records of lawsuits, correspondence between branches (some written in code), correspondence with museums, papers regarding galleries, Edward Fowles' papers, papers concerning exhibitions and loans, and papers regarding major art collectors and consultants. Some records of Kleinberger Galleries (apparently the papers of Harry G. Sperling, president) form a subseries within this series, and contain correspondence. Series III (circa 127 linear feet) includes some photographs, indices, negatives, and x-rays. This series represents the Duveen Brother's stock of images. Indices are available for the majority of the negatives in cold storage.

William Temple Franklin Papers, 1775-1819
Title:
William Temple Franklin Papers 1775-1819
The son of William Franklin, Royal Governor of New Jersey, William Temple Franklin worked as aide to his grandfather, Benjamin Franklin, when the latter served as minister to France during the American Revolution. A bonvivant, Temple received his highest public appointment as Secretary to the American delegation at the Treaty of Versailles in 1782-1783, largely through the influence of his famous grandfather, but never again attained a significant post. As Franklin's literary heir, he edited and published a three volume set of his grandfather's writings in 1817. He married his long time mistress a few months before his death in Paris in 1823. The William Temple Franklin Papers provides a richly detailed portrait of the life of the grandson of Benjamin Franklin, and consists largely of letters received during the years that Temple served as his grandfather's aide in France, 1776-1785. Although much of the correspondence is routine, during this period, Temple received regular reports from friends and diplomatic colleagues relaying information on the American Revolution, the course of diplomatic and peace negotiations, and French public opinion on Benjamin Franklin and the new United States. The collection is also a rich resource for information on the personal lives of the Franklins, including interesting correspondence from Temple's relatives William Franklin, Elizabeth Franklin, Sarah Franklin Bache, and Jonathan Williams, and his mistress Blanchette Caillot.
