Epithet: Prothonotary and Clerk of the Crown for county Glamorgan, etc
Thomas Ken (1637-1711) was bishop of Bath and Wells and nonjuror. In 1679 he became chaplain to Mary, wife of the future William III, in The Hague. On his return to England in 1680, he was appointed one of the king's chaplains, and, in 1684, to the see of Bath and Wells. In 1689, he voted against declaring William and Mary king and queen, and against taking new oaths to the new monarchs. Having refused the oaths, he left the House of Lords and was officially suspended from his diocese in 1689, and returned to Wells.
William Lloyd (1637-1711) was a bishop of Norwich and nonjuror. Loyal to James II, he opposed the revolution of 1688; in 1689, he declared that while he was willing to pray for the royal family, he could not if he had to name King William and Queen Mary. Refusing to take the oaths to the new monarchs, he left the House of Lords, and was suspended from his diocese.

Presbitry anatomized, or, Two dialogues : the first betwixt a Jesuite, and Presbyerian preacher; the second betwixt a Presbyterian preacher in England, and one in Scotland, 1690.
Manuscript, on paper, in a single hand, of an Episcopal tract against Presbyterianism. Dedicated to Thomas Smith, the Bishop of Carlisle, the work attacks Presbyterianism as "the Bane of Britain," disparages Cameronianism, and draws sharp distinctions between English and Scottish Presbyterians. The text is followed by three copies of sermons by Benjamin Calamy (his Discourse about a Scrupulous Conscience), John Tillotson, and John Dolben, Archbishop of York.

Title:
[Poetical miscellany] [1735-1812]
Manuscript poetical miscellany dating from approximately 1735-1812 and containing primarily devotional poetry and Methodist hymns. It appears that most all poems included are previously published works. The items are all written in the same hand, and are partially enumerated in an index located in the middle of the volume. Pages have been numbered in several different schemes, and the book has been written tête-bêche (written from both ends of the volume inwards toward the middle, with the text in one half the volume rotated 180° relative to the other half).

23 letters to William Lloyd, bishop of Norwich, various places, 1691-1704.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 23 letters from Thomas Ken to William Lloyd between 1691 and 1704. The letters discuss religious affairs and events, including Ken's approval of John Kettlewell's book; his belief that "stricter measures" would be fatal to the church; and his happiness that George Hooper has taken over his see and his certainty that Hooper will rescue the diocese from apostasy. He also mentions the violent storm in 1703 which killed Richard Kidder and his family by blowing down their house; discusses the state of his health; and disapproves of one "Mr Jones" as governor to a young gentleman.

Title:
George William Childs papers [manuscript], 1882-1892.
The papers consist chiefly of letters to Childs in thanks for copies of "Recollections" and "The Stratford upon Avon memorial fountain to Shakespeare." There are very brief mentions of the Philadelphia "Public Ledger," the "Commercial Bulletin," and "Lippincott's magazine," hopes for fairer treatment of American Indians, U.S. Grant's travels in Grenada and Peking, memorial church windows in London, the common bond between England and the U. S., and portraits of Union generals at West Point. In addition there are letters, 1851-1881, bound in an extra-illustrated copy of "Recollections" which are to or from people mentioned in the book. These include letters from G.P.R. James on the consulate at Norfolk, Va., Hablot Knight Brown on graphotypes, Lytton Bulwer on a charitable request, William Howitt requesting Irish sketches from Carlton, and a patronage request from Simon Cameron to President Grant. Also Charles Dickens on funeral arrangements for a Mr. Fleming, Samuel Randall and William T. Sherman conveying personal news, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry W. Longfellow and Fitz-Greene Halleck sending regrets, Matthew Arnold sending thanks, and George Bancroft sending checks.
