British painter and watercolorist.
English historical painter.
John Gilbert was born in England about 1805, and came to the United States sometime before 1833,when he was living in Cortland,N.Y. In that year he removed to Oswego, N.Y., and thence to Detroit. In July, 1834, he went to Mt.Clemens. On Oct. 3, 1826, he had married Martha. Entries in his diary suggest that he was a carpenter by trade, but more interested in preaching and teaching. His wife conducted a private; school in Mt. Clemens for several years. (from Macomb Co. History. Dic. Am. Biog; John Gilbert Diary)
British historical painter and draughtsman.

Hunt, Alfred, 1830-1896. Letters, ca. 1887-1896.
Title:
Letters, ca. 1887-1896.
Letters from Hunt, mostly undated, to various correspondents, including Birket Foster, Sir John Gilbert, and Thomas Woolner, primarily concerning his landscape paintings and involvement in exhibitions, and mentioning Benjamin West, John Frederick Lewis, Samuel Palmer, John Ruskin and Turner. Included is a 3 p. letter to William(?) Osler in which Hunt writes at length on inspiration; he recognizes a "life-giving harmonic power" in nature that has inspired, almost unnoticed, his art. Hunt goes on to state his belief that Turner's Venice paintings were inspired not so much by the architectural beauty of the city but by the light, sun and sky, which he associated with it.

Goodall, Frederick, 1822-1904. Letters, 1864-1877.
Title:
Letters, 1864-1877.
The collection comprises eight letters, four of which were sent to his friend Bicknell. Goodall informs him that "the sketches are dry enough to be laid down upon canvas" (1868 Jan. 20). While visiting his family in Clifton, the artist writes Bicknell that he loved his "letter so full of pleasant art-gossip." He did not see the Leeds exhibition, but thinks he is "pretty fairly represented," and a woodcut of "The Declaration" was published in the Illustrations News. He has finished for his friend the sketch "Three Copt children," which will "lessen my pecuniary debt to you." John Gilbert came to visit: "an artist, a man for whom I have the highest respect" (1868 Sept. 1). He cannot visit his friend, as promised, because of the preparations for his [second] trip to Cairo (1870 Sept. 26). A short note invites Bicknell and his girls to meet him at Euston before the 2:10 train (1871 July 11).

Letter signed from Richard Lowke to Philip Henslowe [manuscript], ca. 1595.
With autograph corrections. Addressed to Master hinch(e)le, probably Philip Henslowe. Refers to Henslowe's promise "when you bade me send my wife and you would not send her back without aplase" [a gatherer's place?] "... in time may be as beneficial to the house as another poor man may be, if you do but show her a little countenance before the company, the company will take it upon them..." On the verso is a receipt for the small pox by Dr. [William] Paddy, possibly in Henslowe's hand. Also, transcript of the letter on the back (?) of a note from Mr. Phipps of Brydges St. to Mr. Cubb, October 30, 1826.

Batchelor, W. H. Ali Baba, or, Morgiana and the forty thieves [collection] : a spectacular extravaganza in four acts / originated and designed by David Henderson ; words by Harry B. Smith, Franklyn W. Lee, and John Gilbert ; music by W.H. Batchelor.

Ali Baba, or, Morgiana and the forty thieves [collection] : a spectacular extravaganza in four acts / originated and designed by David Henderson ; words by Harry B. Smith, Franklyn W. Lee, and John Gilbert ; music by W.H. Batchelor. 1892-1895.
Arranged in three groups: I. Librettos (1). II. Promptbooks (6). III. Accompanying material (1). "Ali Baba" originated at the Chicago Opera House. Four of the promptbooks are for the "condensed version." The fifth is labeled "3rd edition" and bears David Henderson's signature. This copy was apparently a working copy and is heavily annotated throughout with additions, cuts, changes in dialogue, and the names of actors and actresses pencilled in. The sixth copy is a partial script for act II of "An Arabian Girl and Forty Thieves," an adaptation or variation of "Ali Baba." The libretto is imperfect, several numbers having been cut out. The press notices from various Chicago papers are also incomplete. Included with them are playbills for two other Henderson "extravaganzas"--"Crystal Slipper" (1888) and "Bluebeard, Jr." (1889).

Hunt, William Holman, 1827-1910. Personal and family papers, ca. 1833-1930.
Title:
Personal and family papers, ca. 1833-1930.
Chiefly correspondence of William Holman Hunt, with some correspondence of his wife Edith and other family members, and commonplace books of Edith and his father, William. The collection has been assembled from various sources, but includes a substantial family archive (formerly acession 870644). Hunt's letters contain extensive information on the Pre-Raphaelites, his own development as an artist, and his travels in the Middle East. His incoming correspondence includes letters from the writer Maurice Hewlett, the painters Walter Deverell, Edward Lear, Ford Madox Brown and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and the critics John Ruskin, Frederic George Stephens and William Michael Rossetti. Taken together, Hunt's correspondence constitutes an important source on the English art scene in the second half of the nineteenth century. The commonplace book of William contains the only known manuscript copy of the "List of Immortals," the manifesto of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood set down in 1848 by Holman Hunt and Rossetti.

Batchelor, W. H. Ali Baba, or, Morgiana and the forty thieves [collection] [microform] : a spectacular extravaganza in four acts / originated and designed by David Henderson ; words by Harry B. Smith, Franklyn W. Lee, and John Gilbert ; music by W.H. Batchelor.

Ali Baba, or, Morgiana and the forty thieves [collection] [microform] : a spectacular extravaganza in four acts / originated and designed by David Henderson ; words by Harry B. Smith, Franklyn W. Lee, and John Gilbert ; music by W.H. Batchelor. 1892-1895.
Arranged in three groups: I. Librettos (1). II. Promptbooks (7).
