Included are many letters of Louis DeBerniere McCrady from Charleston (S.C.), Flat Rock (N.C.), and elsewhere to Jane S. McCrady, and many letters to her from her children, including John McCrady, Louis McCrady, and Emily S. McCrady. Letters (1892-1905) to Jane S. McCrady from her cousin Joel W. Shackelford in Denver (Colorado) concern family matters and Shackelford genealogy. There are also letters (1931) to Jane S. McCrady concerning Shackelford family history from Franklin Shackelford Moseley in Montgomery (Ala.) and Dallas (Texas). Also included are letters (1909-1910) of Thomas W. Bacot regarding financial matters. Other papers consist of financial records, including stock certificates (1883), a collateral note (1894), receipts, and checking account statements; property records (1853-1910) pertaining to Jane S. McCrady's property at Legare and South Bay streets in Charleston (S.C.) including deeds, a bill of foreclosure, an abstract of title, a conveyance, mortgages, receipts, and related correspondence; insurance policies (1886-1920); a copy of the will (1904) of Louis DeBerniere McCrady; copy of the will of Jane S. McCrady; an agreement (1918) between Jane S. McCrady and her son John McCrady regarding the remodeling of her house; blueprints (n.d.) of a house in Charleston (S.C.); and chemical analyses of iron ore deposits made by Allard Memminger. Oversized photograph (n.d.) is of a group of soldiers in full militia dress; one of the individuals is Edward McCrady (1802-1892) or Louis DeBerniere McCrady (1851-1910).

Title: Louis DeBerniere McCrady papers, 1887-1964.

Papers chiefly consist of correspondence (1943-1964) and genealogical research on the related South Carolina families of Coachman, DeBerniere, Ford, McCrady, and Shackelford. In the correspondence, only one letter dates to 1943, and the rest, dated from 1955 to 1964, are mostly letters to McCrady from his cousin Johan Stone in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland. Letters chiefly concern the genealogy of the DeBerniere and Crommelin families, but also discuss family matters, events in Great Britain, and other matters. A letter from Stone of Dec. 14, 1957 thanks McCrady for a publication entitled "The Santee" and adds: "Over here our history lessons seem to be written by Northerners and, apart from Lee's brilliant campaigns, the South apparently seems to existence since the civil war...we never knew what the South had suffered after the war in its role of 'conquered province.'" Also included are papers (1901-1906) of Louis DeBerniere McCrady, Sr., which consist of correspondence with T.W. Bacot chiefly relating to the legal and business affairs of the Cherokee Marble and Iron Company (of North Carolina), and related financial records. Papers pertaining to the Shackelford family include a scrapbook (1887?-1920s) of mostly newspaper clippings, including obituaries of Shackelford family members and relations. Ford family genealogy includes information on the Hume family and other related families, and a map of Georgetown District (S.C.) showing the location of Ford and Shackelford plantations. Collection also includes a few miscellaneous items and photographs. Photographs depict members of the McCrady and DeBerniere families; most are unidentified, except for a photograph of Louis DeBerniere McCrady, Sr., and two portraits of persons tentatively identified as John Anthony DeBerniere and Gen. Abraham Crommelin DeBerniere.
