First emperor of Mexico. Born 1783 in Valladolid (Morelia); executed July 19, 1824, in Padilla, Tamaulipas. Iturbide joined the army in 1800, by 1810 was fighting with the royalists, and by 1820 held the rank of colonel. In February 1821 he and Vicente Guerrero signed the Plan de Iguala and created the Ejército Trigarante. In August 1821 Iturbide and viceroy Juan O'Donoju signed the Tratado de Córdoba, ending the war and giving Mexico independence. Iturbide was proclaimed emperor in May 1822 but by October was forced to dissolve the national congress because of resistance from the opposition. In March 1823 he reinstated congress, then abdicated and fled to Italy. In April 1824 the congress, having already declared his administration void, revoked his pension and declared Iturbide a traitor. When he returned to Mexico in July 1824 he was apprehended on arrival in Tamaulipas and executed the next day. In 1838 Anastasio Bustamante declared Iturbide one of the "First Heroes of Mexican Independence."

Title:
Juan E. Hernández y Dávalos collection, 1692-1886 (bulk 1811-1831).
Manuscripts and printed material relating primarily to the Mexican independence movement, but also pertaining to conditions in Mexico at the end of the 18th century, the empire of Agustín Iturbide, the establishment of the republic, and Mexico's governance and foreign relations, especially with England, France, Spain, and the U.S. Many historical figures of Mexico are represented in the collection. The Manuscripts subgroup, in which over half the items date from 1820 to 1825, includes letters, descriptions of battles, records of insurgents' trials, military service records, documents concerning the conspiracy of Manuel Reyes, the archives of General José de la Cruz, many personal papers of José Mariano Michelena, and material gathered by Carlos María Bustamante to document the independence movement. The Printed Material subgroup, in which the bulk of the items are dated 1822-1823, contains among its pamphlets and broadsides many literary productions, such as manifestos, speeches, odes, poetry, sermons, and pastoral letters, as well as decrees, circulars, and proclamations. Most items in Printed Materials pertain to independence, the empire of Iturbide, and the early days of the republic.

Title:
Broadsides from Mexico Collection, 1676-1927 (bulk 1820-1927).
The broadsides are divided into two series, the first organized by state and the second organized by departments of the federal government. The first series is arranged alphabetically by state, and chronologically thereafter. The second series contains folders for departments of the federal government which are filed alphabetically, and thereafter chronologically. In the front of the first folder for each state or department are photocopies of the processor's notes for the folder's contents. The finding aid identifies the content for each folder including subjects of the broadsides, selected names of individuals, and span dates for the materials in the folder. Note that a number of oversized broadsides are located in flat files. Contains about 2,000 state and federal Mexican broadsides, publicly distributed documents, issued by various offices of the federal, state, municipal, and local governments during the 19th and early 20th-centuries. Topics referred to in these broadsides include invasions by Spain, France and the United States of America; mobilization for wars, including the Mexican American War; soldiers; elections; government positions; decretos (decrees); courts; prisoners; and financial issues, such as taxes, budgets, and customs. Often the broadsides in the individual state folders contain information from the federal government which the governor of the state released and signed. Some documents refer to the political conflicts between those who supported the Roman Catholic Church and those who advocated rigorous anti-clericalism. Also included are specific Plans, a 19th-century aspect of Mexican political culture whereby a military or political leader would publish a Plan, usually named after where it was issued, and gauge response to it. Selected individuals mentioned in the broadsides include: Gilardo Gomez, Alberto Betancourt, J. Trinidad Alamillo, Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana, Augustine de Iturbide, Anastasio Bustamante, and Benito Juarez.

Thompson, George Alexander. Selected papers of George Alexander Thompson, [1797-1828].
Title:
Selected papers of George Alexander Thompson, [1797-1828].
Consists of the original page proofs of the first seven chapters pertaining to post-Iturbide Mexico, eventually removed from Thompson's work, which was published as "Narrative of An Official Visit to Guatemala from Mexico" (London: John Murray, 1829). The excised section entitled "Narrative of a Mission to Guatemala from Mexico," treats Thompson's departure from Plymouth, his arrival at Vera Cruz, and his journey to Xalapa. From Xalapa he moved to Mexico City. While there he met a F. Iglesias, a close friend of Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) during his travels. Thompson describes the general reaction in the country to the execution of Agustín de Iturbide in 1824, his flirtation with a group of young ladies, and the inauguration of Mexico's first president, Guadalupe Victoria. Includes extensive annotations and manuscript notes in pencil, probably in Thompson's hand. Together with 2 letters concerning Thompson's appointment as Secretary to the British Commission to Mexico, dated Oct. 10, 1823 and Jan. 21, 1826, in a secretarial hand and signed by Joseph Planta of the Foreign Service. The first letter informs Thompson of his appointment, while the second resolves a pay dispute. Also includes a letter from the royal librarian giving permission for the "Narrative" to be dedicated to the King, Dec. 1828. The remaining correspondence is primarily between a young Thompson and his father (George Nisbett) and his sister (Matilda), written while Thompson was a student at Rugby School (1797-1802). There are also three items of printed ephemera, including 2 variant advertisements for a pending supplement (which was never published) to his previously published translation of Alcedo's five-volume "Diccionerio," entitled "Shortly will be Published, A Supplement to Thompson's Alcedo; or Dictionary of America and West Indies..." (n.d.), and a list of subscribers, dated 1831, entitled "Subscriptions to Thompson's America and the West Indies."
