Papers of the American humorist, journalist, author. Collections contains correspondence, 1892-1959; typescript mss. of articles, books, poems, speeches, and stories; notebooks; photographs; and memorabilia, including clippings, drawings, genealogical material, reviews, a scrapbook, and a subject file relating to Orville and Wilbur Wright, of whom Kelly wrote a number of articles and books. Correspondents include, among others, George Ade, Sherwood Anderson, Norman Angell, Newton D. Baker, Nicholas Biddle, Margaret Bourke-White, Bruce Catton, Winston Churchill, Irvin S. Family and general correspondence from Indianapolis and Kennebunkport, clippings, programs, autobiographical writings, a cartoon of Tarkington, and other miscellaneous materials. Correspondence topics include family business, literary matters, art collecting, the Dramatic Club, the New Deal, Wendell Willkie's presidential campaign of 1940, and World War II. Correspondents include family members Margaret Booth Jameson, Susanah Tarkington, and Donald Jameson; family retainer Stanley Thirkell; Carlton B. McCulloch; conductor Fabien Sevitzky; art dealer Abris Silberman; Earle J. Bernheimer; and Edward William Bok. Visual materials consist of photographs and prints of Tarkington in Indianapolis and Maine. There are individual portraits of him as well as many with family and friends, his homes, and pets.

Materials donated by Edmund H. Eitel originally to the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library including Eitel's collection of Riley's papers, his research regarding Riley, and Eitel's personal materials. Riley's correspondents include Young E. Allison, Joel Chandler Harris, Charles Holstein, Rudyard Kipling, Meredith Nicholson, Bill Nye, T.C. Steele, John Philip Sousa, and Susanah Tarkington. Riley's business records, correspondence, and bills include materials regarding Bobbs-Merrill Company, Charles Scribner's Sons, the Columbia Club, and the Contemporary Club, as well as records from his lecture tours. Also included is Riley's poetry in handwritten, printed, and galley form; sheet music; invitations; programs; birthday and Christmas cards and greetings; and tributes. Visual materials include Riley portraits and photographs of family and friends. Eitel's materials include typed copies of Riley letters; research notes; galley and page proofs, including Riley's COMPLETE WORKS (1913); biographical research on Riley; Riley's copyright contracts; and Eitel's cash books.

Tarkington, Susanah, 1870-1966. Papers, 1898-1932.

Title: Papers, 1898-1932.

Tarkington's diaries for 1898, 1913, 1925, 1929, 1931, and 1932, and one folder of correspondence. The 1898 diary was written while she was married to Temple A. Robinson and details a trip to the Caribbean. The 1913 diary contains entries about the flood that struck Indianapolis. The 1925 diary describes travel in Africa and Europe. The 1929, 1931, and 1932 diaries deal mainly with visits to Johns Hopkins for a series of operations on her husband's eyes.
