English author.
English author, novelist, and poet.
Naomi Mitchison was born in Scotland in 1897, the daughter of the physiologist John Haldane (1892-1964). She studied science at Oxford and, in 1916, married the barrister Gilbert Mitchison (1890-1970). Gilbert ('Dick') Mitchison shared his wife's socialist beliefs and was later Labour MP for Kettering (1945-1964). He was made a life peer (Baron Mitchison of Carradale) in 1964.
Mitchison herself was a prolific author and completed over ninety works in her lifetime. These included historical and contemporary novels, poetry, plays, short stories, children's and fantasy fiction, and a set of memoirs. Politically active in the 1930s when she stood as a Labour Party candidate for the Scottish Universities in 1935, advocacy - especially of women's rights but also in respect of Scottish island communities - remained an important part of her life. She travelled widely and had a particular interest in African affairs. Africa provided a setting for some of her novels. In 1963 she was made a tribal adviser ('Mmarona' or 'mother') to the Bakgatla of Botswana. The close relationship with this tribal community began when, having been stranded while travelling, the chief offered her hospitality. A lasting relationship with the Bakgatla developed from this and she continuted to visit even in her later years.

New Yorker records
Weekly magazine founded in New York City in 1925 by Harold W. Ross, Jane Grant, Alexander Woollcott and Raoul Fleischman. The records consist of correspondence, interoffice memoranda, edited and corrected manuscripts and typescripts, drawings, statistical reports, lists of story and art ideas, photographs, and sound recordings and printed materials created during the foundation and day-to-day operations of the magazine from 1924-1984. This material documents the production of every issue of the magazine and provides insight on the careers of its staff and contributors.

Bridge, Ann, 1889-1974. Papers, 1815-1973, (bulk 1905-1973).
Title:
Papers, 1815-1973, (bulk 1905-1973).
The papers of Lady Mary Dolling Sanders O'Malley, who wrote under the pseudonym Ann Bridge, consist largely of her holograph manuscripts for books published from 1932 through 1973. Peripheral materials include manuscripts grouped as poems, short stories, articles, reviews, and lectures, as well as manuscripts of unpublished works. Also present are several groups of correspondence, scrapbooks of clippings and letters, and a few photographs. Though the papers chiefly concern Lady O'Malley's works and their publication, there is correspondence relating to her experiences as the wife of a diplomat, some of which were incorporated into her writings. These include her impressions while traveling in China (1925-27), Dalmatia (1930), Albania (1936), and Portugal (1946-47). Four very large files of correspondence, chiefly 1953-1954, represent her research for Portrait of My Mother, and contain extensive genealogical information concerning the Brooking, Day, and Sanders families. Among this research material are some originals and transcripts of early family letters, 1815-1898. Numerous letters from family, friends, fans, agents, publishers, and others are present. Among some of the notable correspondents are Lord Edgar Douglas Adrian, Sir Leopold Amery, Maurice Baring, Lord Ronald Gorell Barnes, Lord Max Beaverbrook, John Betjeman, Laurence Binyon, Sir Nevile Bland, Gordon Bottomley, Sir Angus Cunninghame Graham, Lord George Derwent, Morris L. Ernst, E.M. Forster, Sir Ralph Furse, Sir Stephen Gaselee, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Cosmo Gordon Lang (Archbishop of Canterbury), Loelia Mary Grosvenor Lindsay (Duchess of Windsor), Alfred R. McIntyre, Margaret Haig Thomas Mackworth (Viscountess Rhondda), Sir Edward Marsh, Charles J.B. Masefield, John Masefield, Sir Charles Mendl, Naomi Mitchison, Sir Owen St. Clair O'Malley, A.D. Peters, Raymond Queneau, I.A. Richards, Denys Kilham Roberts, David Robertson, V. Sackville-West, Elisabeth Schumann, Lord William Strang, Edward Weeks, Dame Rebecca West, and Steuart Wilson.
