Family, business, and political correspondence and other papers of Daniel Moreau Barringer and members of his family. Included are letters, 1830s-1870s, from numerous North Carolina politicians and public officials, including Daniel Laurens Barringer, David F. Caldwell, Thomas L. Clingman, William Gaston, James Graham, William Alexander Graham, Willie P. Mangum, David L. Swain, and Calvin H. Wiley. Letters concern such issues as state and national politics; positions to be filled by President Zachary Taylor, 1848-1849; slavery; railroads; the University of North Carolina; and gold mining in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties, N.C. Papers for the period of Barringer's diplomatic service in Spain are especially full and include material relating to Americans taken prisoner after an expedition against the Spanish in Cuba. Letters, 1844-1860, from Barringer's brother, Paul Brandon Barringer, cotton planter near Oxford, Miss., discuss agricultrual, economic, social, and political affairs in Mississippi. There are also letters from Franklin L. Smith, a student at the University of North Carolina, 1827 and 1829; about politics during the Civil War; about race relations just after the Civil War; and about student life at Washington College, Lexington, Va., 1867-1869. Papers of Barringer's wife, Elizabeth (Wethered) Barringer (1822-1867) of Baltimore, Md., document her life, including treatment she received for cancer, 1866-1867, and the lives of members of the Wethered family. There are also two color photographs of oil portraits of Daniel Moreau Barringer and Elizabeth Barringer painted by Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz during the Barrigers' stay in Madrid.

Correspondence, photographs, and autobiographical sketches relating mainly to Lanman's "Dictionary of the United States Congress" and to his interest in the United States Navy and the War Department. Autobiographical letters from the following North Carolina Congressmen are included: Joseph Carter Abbott, Archibald Hunter Arrington, Thomas Lanier Clingman (2), William Davidson, John Adams Gilmer, David Heaton, James Madison Leach, David Settle Reid, Alfred Moore Scales, Henry Marchmore Shaw, Francis Edwin Shober, John Pool, and Warren Winslow. Other items include: letters addressed to various Secretaries of the Navy throughout the 19th century; letters from Robert Smith, Secretary of the Navy under Thomas Jefferson, to Attorneys General Caesar A. Rodney and John Breckinridge; one broadside sent by Lanman to the Congress to announce a new edition of his "Dictionary"; 2 rare photographs--a wet collodion process proof of David Settle Reid attributed to Matthew Brady and a calotype of Congressman James Barroll Ricaud of Maryland; two letters from Daniel Moreau Barringer, a three-term congressman from North Carolina (1843-49), regarding Lanman's proposed "Dictionary"; and a biographical sketch of Barringer's uncle, Daniel Laurens Barringer, likewise a Congressman from North Carolina (1826-1835).

The collection includes Family, political, and business papers of several prominent western North Carolinians, including Mrs. Jane (Poindexter) Clingman of Yadkin county, chiefly family correspondence; her son-in-law, Richard Clauselle Puryear (1801-1867), Yadkin planter, Whig U.S. representative, 1853-1857, and member of the Confederate Congress, including bills, receipts, accounts, letters written from Washington, D.C., letters written and received at Richmond, Va., during the Civil War, and an account book for blacksmith and wagon-body work; and her son, Thomas Lanier Clingman (1812-1897), U.S. senator and Confederate general. T. L. Clingman's papers, 1828-1890, chefly concern his mining and mineral interests, including gold mines in Georgia, the Chestatee Hydraulic Company of New York and Georgia, the Yahoola Rver and Cane Creek Hydraulic Hose Mining Company of Boston, and lands and minerals in western North Carolina. Political correspondence for the 1850s is included, relating primarily to North Carolina. Also available is an account of General George Stoneman's Raid, April 1865, on the Puryear family home in Yadkin County.

Puryear, concerning his activity in public life, a projected trip to Europe in 1859, and family matters; a letter from Clingman recommending the appointment of Bushrod W. Vick to a consulship; and a letter, 1863, to Clingman concerning desertion in his brigade during his absence. The remainder of the collection is volumes, including three order books for Clingman's brigade, 1862-1864, containing orders and letters, 276 items, concerning Confederate military activities around Camp Whiting, N.C., and a notebook used in Clingman's law studies.
