Correspondence, printed material and photographs concerning Robert Abbe and the custodianship of the Abbe Cabinet, 1919-1939, compiled by John H. Girvin, Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Series 2 contains items compiled by Abbe's secretary, May Moon, and sent to Girvin for use in a memorial volume to Robert Abbe. Included are two letters to Girvin from May Moon; bookplates and printed material from Lafayette National Park (now Acadia National Park) in Bar Harbor, Me.; a program from the dedication of the Robert Abbe Museum, also in Bar Harbor; obituaries and memoirs of Robert Abbe; and photoprints of the Robert Abbe Memorial Museum and Abbe's homes in Philadelphia and Bar Harbor. Of special interest is Marie Curie's description (in French) of the electrometer she donated to the College of Physicians and a signed letter (in French, 21 Mar. 1922) to Robert Abbe from Curie. Collection, 1909-1913, of original incoming letters with copies of outgoing letters of George Edmund De Schweinitz (1858-1938), President of the College of Physicians from 1910 to 1912. Each volume contains the correspondence of one year of his presidency and is arranged by subject. Included is correspondence pertaining to scientific meetings of the College, the Council, committees and sections of the College, the Library, the preparation of memoirs, the presentation of lectures, and the donation of gifts and portraits. The 1911 correspondence contains letters on bills proposed by the state legislature and correspondence with several Weir Mitchell Lecturers, including Swedish scientist, Svante Arrhenius.

Collection, 1912-1916, containing original incoming letters with copies of outgoing letters of James Cornelius Wilson (1847-1934), President of the College of Physicians from 1913 to 1915. Letters are arranged chronologically. The correspondence provides information about artwork belonging to the College, including John Singer Sargent's portrait of Sir William Osler, donated in 1914. Also of interest are letters from Robert William Vonnoh concerning his 1897 portrait of S. Weir Mitchell. The collection documents the College's involvement in controversial political issues affecting the medical community, including opposition to the "anti-vivisectionists" and laws that would limit access to cadavers or restrict medical research. The collection also contains letters from notable Fellows of the College of Physicians, including past-president G. E. De Schweinitz, George Fales Baker, H. A. Hare, William W. Keen, John K. Mitchell, S. Weir Mitchell, Sir William Osler, Francis R. Packard, William Pepper, George Morris Piersol, and Alfred Stengel.

Collection forms part of the records of the Office of the Librarian of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Included is correspondence, material from annual meetings of the MLA, and other miscellaneous items pertaining to the organization, 1899-1929. The records are from the files of Charles Perry Fisher, Librarian of the College from 1882 to 1932. Of special interest in Series 1 is correspondence concerning a 1924 MLA resolution, which stated that libraries should no longer purchase German books and periodicals, because German publishers were charging "unreasonable and unjustifiable" prices. Included are letters from William W. Keen and letters from German publishers who denied the charges brought against them. Prominent correspondents in the collection are James F. Ballard and John Ruhräh. Other notable correspondents are: Ada Bunnell, M. R. Charlton, George Dock, George M. Gould, George D. Hersey, Albert Tracy Huntingdon, Marcia C. Noyes, and C. F. Wylde. Also present in the collection are holograph drafts and typed carbon copies of Charles Perry Fisher's letters. Series 2 contains material from MLA annual meetings, including a Secretary's Report (1900), programs (1906-1929), minutes from the 1910 meeting, and a typescript of Fisher's 1912 Presidential Address. Present in Series 3 is miscellaneous material from the MLA, including membership applications, membership lists, informational pamphlets, copies of the Constitution and By-Laws (1903-1929), and the sketches of two different shields designed for the MLA (1921).

This collection of records from the Building Committee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, spanning 1903 to 1915, consists of correspondence, minutes, reports, financial records, and miscellaneous material such as photoprints and blueprints. The collection also includes minutes, correspondence, and financial records from the Subcommittee on Furniture. Series 4 contains estimates, bills, receipts, summaries of expenses, and other financial records documenting the cost of the project. The records of the Subcommittee on Furniture, including correspondence, minutes, and financial records, are contained in Series 5. Series 6 contains miscellaneous material; present is a photostat of a certificate presented to Andrew Carnegie for being the most generous donor to the College Building Fund (ca. 1903), a postcard of the College and other photoprints (1909), a blueprint of a proposed plan for the Sinkler Garden (1912), and blueprints of the Sinkler tablet (1912).

Included in the collection are papers of librarians Thomas Hewson Bache (1855-1863), C. S. Boker (1864), J. H. Slack (1865-1867), Robert Bridges (1868-1881), Frank Woodbury (1881-1882), and Charles Perry Fisher (1882-1932). Series 2, spanning 1859 to 1908, provides additional information on the College Library. Included are lists of subscriptions to journals, card catalog subscriptions, journal exchanges, and book purchases. Miscellaneous material is contained in Series 3; of note are two blueprints, one for a proposed pneumatic tube system (1908), and the other for a reading room desk (1909).
