Title: Diary, Montana, 1858 Jan 1-Aug 30.

Holograph diary documenting Burr's activities in the Bitterroot River Valley in 1858. The entries contain descriptions of Burr's work with his cattle, hunting and fishing trips, friendships and trade with Nez Percé, Flathead (Salish) and Snake (Shoshoni); and his travels to Fort Benton, Fort Owen, a Catholic mission, Hell Gate Canyon, Salt Lake City, and other areas. Burr also comments on his concern about potential attacks by Mormons, small pox among the Indians, and the activities of fellow settlers Dr. Atkinson, Jake Meeks, Jim [Minesinger?], John Powell and others. Following the diary entries are twelve pages of accounts relating to provisions and cattle. The front endpaper and four pages at the back of the diary contain lists of English words followed by translations into an unidentified Indian language. There are additional miscellaneous notes on the front and back endpapers. The diary was written in a blank printed log entitled Observations of Double Altitudes.

Title: Frederick H. Burr papers, 1857-1895

F.H. Burr was a pioneer placer miner in California and Montana. His diary (1857), "Kept in the Bitterroot Country and During his journeys from Fort Owen to Salt Lake City and return to the Gold Digging in 1857," discusses his travel and daily experiences. Included in the diary are notes and lists of trade goods and livestock. Also included are two outgoing letters (October 12, 1868; May 16, 1895 to James Stuart and Granville Stuart respectively. The diaries of the Stuarts document the history of Montana, experiences in California, 1854-54, traveling across the Plains, 1857, 1866, hunting and fishing in Deer Lodge country, 1867, an 1873 trip to Yellowstone National Park, and staking a cattle ranch, 1880. F. H. Burr's diary notes trips from Fort Owen to Salt Lake City and return to the gold diggings. A. B. Henderson's diary records an 1866 Yellowstone expedition and prospecting in the Snake and Wind Rivers and in Yellowstone country, 1867-73.

Five volumes containing accounts, vocabularies of American Indian languages, and other notes, written in holograph manuscript by Granville and James Stuart. A volume signed by Granville Stuart, 1857, contains lists of words with Flathead [Salish] and Nez Percé translations; also present are brief notes and accounts for merchandise sold by the Stuarts, listed under names of customers, 1861-1863 and undated. A second volume consists of similar accounts dated 1863. A third volume, consisting mostly of similar accounts,is written in a printed memorandum book published by L.O. Wilson & Company, dealers in dry goods, New York. The book contains printed lists of L.O. Wilson & Company merchandise and is signed by Oliver Ruby, 1859. Also present in this volume is a brief account of travel along the Platte River in Wyoming, 1859, by Granville Stuart, James Stuart, and Rezin Anderson. Accounts in these volumes are listed under names including George Ives, Rezin Anderson, and Frederick H. Burr. A fourth volume contains brief accounts of George Ives, Ives & Crow, Virginia City, Idaho Territory; and diary entries pertaining to a gold prospecting trip in Montana, March-July, 1864, possibly written by James Stuart. Also present are brief references to James Stuart, Firm of Dance & Stuart, Virginia City, 1864, and to the estate of George Ives, 1863. Laid in is a holograph manuscript note, signed by "Mrs. Stuart," identifying the volume as an account book of George Ives. A fifth volume contains lists of words with Assiniboine and Sioux [Dakota] translations, with brief diary entries regarding relations with Assiniboine Indians, accounts and notes, 1871-1873 and undated, possibly written by James Stuart.
